Over the past decade there has not been so much innovation any more with juggling probs. In the near past people like Matty, Kilian and others have experimented with lighter club handles and Henrys now is producing carbon fiber handles which make juggling clubs lighter in weight and thus easier to do long runs of juggling or to juggle more objects. Now Luke Burrage has developed a hyperboloid shape for club handles and made a 30 minutes video where he explains the why and how:
I wish he would provide the source files from his experiments so that others could try to tweak them to their liking and maybe a new club handle comes widely available.
Are there any more developments like this with juggling probs that you know of? Can we have the sources of those experiments be in the open, that we can innovate all together and learn from each other?
Inspirational Circus Videos
For the past year I posted every week a circus video that inspired me on the fediverse.
I have compiled that series of posts in a webpage to make the list of videos more accessible:
The project is now over. I have an archive of circus videos on my computer and these are some of them.
These are all videos that inspired me to do circus, to train, to be excited about upcoming conventions and to remember moments I experienced.
Please go out and enjoy doing circus!
The truth about Vertax.
...can finally be revealed in this thread (click!):
https://mastodon.social/@docpop/113234213120973371
...which then veers off into loop diabolo and yo-yo talk. (Check out Doc Pop's Loop vid while you're there.) Which also makes me wonder when I first saw loop diabolo. I'm fairly sure someone was doing it in London in the mid-90s. I suspect Sam, who I shall now email. I wonder if there are any clips of it in any old Alan Plotkin videos. I'd probably have to watch them to find out though, and that's going to take a lot of time. :-) (Plus, I think he took down the all his full convention videos 'cos of music rights.)
(Meanwhile, since it was a t-shirt post that started this all off...)

IT WAS YOU?!!
Well done, some people briefly called it Excalibur which was clearly a rubbish name. Glad vertax stuck!

“Excalibur? That’s not even a good name for a sword”
Upon first trying to remember loop diabolo, an image of Sam (Veale, btw) sprang to mind, but also the possibility that Donald Grant or Bruce had showed me something, perhaps in early '94, but that memory was hazier. I've now asked Sam, and he says he indeed played with loop diabolo, but credits it to Donald. And, on looking into his books, I find in 1996's Totally Diabolical, the description of what he called Diaboloop.
Sam also cites Venus as doing the first vertax he saw - (which also jogs my memory: deliberate tilting of the #diabolo, in order to go into...) the gyro grind.
I do recall correcting someone who said "horizontal diabolo" with "it's called Vertax", and then thinking "am I going to get away with this? Yeah, I think I just did...". Thankfully, it needed no intervention from me for the analagous backronym of "horax" that someone came up with to die a quick death. (Seuss meets Rowling?)
I miss DCA. The gang there would've enjoyed this. So it goes...
Yours ipsedixitistically,

Apparently I was doing two in and on a loop in late ‘95, and I think Dave Proctor was, as with everything else, a big influence. I would guess that one diabolo loop stuff would predate that by well more than a couple of years.
.sig is on a train. Just passed through Obdam. Still can’t avoid reading that as ‘Obligatory dam’.
I like how it all developed. Thanks for starting with the term vertax!
IIRC the french used to call a vertax genocide excalibur, because you were cutting the air with the diabolo sticks and string like a sword.
Marko Akkanen did a video about how to move with your diabolo in vertax: https://youtu.be/Pox_ksO53fk
I came late to the scene in 2009. Were Tr'espace and Ryo Yabe inspirational for your t-shirt design?
I liked how your T-Shirts "Vertax is rubbish" influenced Alexis Levillon to post a video called "Vertax is not rubbish": https://youtu.be/l72lbLbcXyM. Later he even did 3 diabolos in vertax: https://youtu.be/jgtvYG8nRVY
Alexis invented then the combination of vertax and horizontal with https://youtu.be/3xBNIgN7ouk. The diabolo.ca community coined the term galaxy to attribute the trick to Alexis.
Nowadays vertax has become very popular in the scene, especially in Asia.
Is there more historical information online about vertax diabolo?
As a reference source, DCA is alive and well (but not thriving) in the archive. So to answer your question, no, this thread is what inspired the t-shirt:
https://web.archive.org/web/20230329184450/https://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=3153.0
So, there’s probably a lot more info about vertax in there, you care to trawl through it. There’s also a site called something like “the museum of diabolo history”. Or was, at least. I’ll see if I can find the link for you…
I just needed to remember that it was French:
https://www.museediabolo.fr/
Yes I know that site and there is a museum in China as well. I was thinking about the newer developments in the past 30 years. I guess your link to the internet archive for dca is the best information we have. Thanks!
I was at #TRAP last week. TRAP [0] is a circus space that is placed in Vienna, Austria. This place was wonderful to train. There were three rooms, but I was only using the hall. The project is a habiTAT [1] project which is supporting and realizing self-organized and socially bound apartment building projects.
The people training at TRAP were very friendly. One of them was lending me their bicycle to be able to fetch some food from the nearby supermarket. I met people I knew from circus conventions years ago. It was a good training atmosphere at the space. Everybody was working on their projects and being supportive to each other. In the small entrance/chill area people hang around chatting and eating.
I would love to have such a place where I live. Thanks to TRAP for this wonderful project. When you are in Vienna and want to train some circus consider visiting this lovely circus space.

Moin,
once a week I am posting a circus video that inspired me in the past on the fediverse:
Greetings,
momo.
Quality time.
I recognized that I have spent more than a year of my life (> 400 days) on circus conventions. That is a lot, but it has been a great year!
So thank you to all organizers and participants who made this a time I appreciate.

Impressive. I've been to around 250 days of conventions: 9 EJCs (9 days), 26 IJCs (mostly 5 days each), a few other international conventions, and a handful of local weekend events.
I always wanted to attend an IJC, but never made it. The stories of those people who attended the event and the videos (Let Them Come - Neta Oren, Toss Up And Sides Again - Ori Roth) made me want to be at this special location.
You have 104 attended events in your JE profile. I'm at 209, so I'd guess I've been somewhere around 2 years in Juggleland. Roll on the next one.
Marvin, could you pick up this piece of p— sorry, I mean, add up all our event-days for us please?
Happy 2 year conventionversary!
209 Events is impressive. I think I met you at EJC 2011 Munich and BJC 2018 Canterbury.
I have been to 8 EJCs and many 4 days events. What impresses me also that almost a third of the events (not days) I took part where abroad. So I am also happy that I could travel to foreign countries.
Your profile will now tell you how many days you've spent at juggling festivals.
& because we are all curious here is the full Festival attendance Leaderboard.
If you haven't updated which festivals you've attended for a while remember you can view the events list in Update attendance mode which adds a column of links to quickly add yourself to lots of festivals.
#NewFeature
It would appear regular Bungay attendees have a distinct advantage in this aspect!

Woohoo! Top 10 baby!
Not bad considering it’s been 5 years since I turned up in person at anything at all
Thanks Orinoco! I suspect me being on top is more due to full record-keeping, 3 virtual BBUs (which, clearly, "don't count"), and a few kendama and yo-yo events being in there too. Plus there are some events I wasn't at for the whole duration, but also a few early ones that aren't on the list, so I reckon I can still claim a full 2 years-worth. But someone younger and keener could easily close the gap with a consistent 5-10 years work. :-)
I guess place 42 isn't bad (nice number at least), considering I have also been to 14 week-long juggling events that aren't even on JugglingEdge. (Because invite only and mailing list.)
Does cancelled events count?

Wooo - #1 at 837 days! For now, until other people update theirs and overtake me 😉
4% of my life at juggling conventions. Or 7.6% of my life since I discovered conventions at age 25. Not bad going.
Hey everyone,
I´m Sandy from the most northern spot in Germany. We are oragnising the "WeltenCon" (means Worlds-Convention), where we try to open up for different worlds. Jugglingsworlds especially, but we also try to make people from both sides of der danish-gernman-border meet, have a world for clothing swap and sustainability, worlds for sport and dance beside juggling and more. And we have good vegan and vegetarian food ;-).
That´s actually what I love most in jugglers sanctums. There is a space for close to everyone. Everyone can find a tool or disciplin for themselves, everyone shares their knowledge, tools and harmony and there is no rassicm or hatred. Or maybe I was just lucky with the jugglers I´ve met untill now, but I don´t think so. So it´s great to meet new people from the moving-throwing-dancing scene. And maybe some of you like to join us at the WeltenCon 2024 from first to third of march 2024 in Flensburg ;-D.
Sending lots of smiles and fun,
Sandy
Hi Sandy,
Welcome to Juggling Edge, good luck with your juggling convention.
just adding a hashtag to link to the details of your event on the Juggling Events listing page, so people can find more information and add themselves as going.
Jugglers on the whole do tend to be wonderful people :)
#WeltenCon2024
most wonderful artists deep inside are very difficult highly eccentric divas °•°scnr°•° ;oD
Thank you weltencon,
the convention was a blast!
The school had such a great brick stone architecture. When looking down from the registration it looked like a river floating down the mountains. I liked the open architecture and the view to Flensburger Förde from the balcony. The food was delicious and the organization team always smiling and kind. There were two small gyms. One for acrobatics and one for juggling. I loved also the auditorium where the open stagigate and gala show and renegade renegade were taking place. That was a place where I juggled a lot and workshops were taken place. The convention was very family friendly and I loved that there were people from Germany as well from Denmark. My favorite moment was that the 4 year old daughter of a friend of mine with whom I was there has been adopted by a danish clown on Friday. Both fell in love with each other, despite the clown talked danish and the child only german. Both communicated without words in a language of friendship. The gala show was extra-ordinary and tasted very good. The hosts of the gala show were preparing a meal with ingredients inspired by the artists. My favorite act was a duo act on an arial hoop from the Ukraine. Also the poi act of Morten was a beauty to watch. Mikas act "About a box" made the audience very happy.
The juggling games where special as usual for weltencon. They do not do endurance juggling games. It is no competition who is the best juggler. The games are fun for everybody and everybody can participate and have a good time. Like the whole spirit of the convention is to encourage people to spend a good time with each other!
For me it was the first convention this year and this started the convention season in a brilliant manner!

Information about juggling conventions.
I am really happy for the events page at juggling edge. Information is openly available.
I m not so happy when orgas are using closed plattforms out of their control to organize a convention. Why is information of the coming EJC only available on Facebook? Why do some conventions only inform via x.com, facebook.com, instagram.com? It excludes people who do not want to have an account there. This is something that makes me very unhappy.
</rant>
it is not hard to create accounts on those networks.
as an old event org it would frustrate me that i could never add my event to the 100,000,000 platforms lol.
If people do not want to join platforms where information is held, what do you advise?
I would expect somebody to hold an event to host their own website and provide information about the event there and not in those data silos.
Little Paul - - Parent #
Blimey! Now there’s a name I’ve not seen in a while!
I hope you’re well old chap 😀
Oh well, if we are doing the "I've not posted in for ever" dance - howdy guys..
On a non juggling related matter - local steam railway museaum has the 3rd oldest steam train in existance:

It might not be hard to create accounts on "those networks", but there are those of us who wish to remain off them entirely. Remember, if it's a commercial concern, and what they are providing is free, the product is you.
That aside, instead of having one site and a bunch of fire-and-forget links posted to "the 100,000 platforms lol", you now have a bunch of posts on "100,000 social media platforms lol" that you are going to be expected to reply to. And hopefully a central site that you can maintain, or you have independent posts on "100,000 social media platforms lol" that you're going to have to maintain. Or you restrict it to one, but then you're restricting your membership. Facebook? Only old geezers on there. TikTok? Only teenagers and millennials. TwitterX? The same nazis you'll find on Truth and Gab. Instagram, etc etc etc.
Obviously it's a good idea for an organiser to use those networks, but they're more work IMO. And you won't reach people like me who refuse to even have a mobile phone.
Absolutely Tuffy! You’re not the only one without a mobile. Anyone can set up a website for free at wordpress.com or elsewhere and then advertise it on the SM website of your taste. I suggest you also post it on jugglingedge and put a link to the events page on your website for the rest of the world. The edge has the best list ever.
The very best place for information to be, is the place the most people will read it.
At the moment, that means social media networks.
there will always be some outliers who done use them. there are folk who still dont use the internet at all.
but as an organiser, the effort spend chasing those outliers to solicit half a dozen additional tickets was simply never worth the effort.
I am self employed, have a website, and have social media accounts for my business, i can say with no doubts i would starve if i had to rely on the website for clients, (linkedin is my income provider these days)
a website rarely allows customers to chat/discuss a product etc, there are forums that can be integrated, and again as an oganiser the effort maintaining those, keeping them spam free etc is huge.
you are right though an event should have a website, with the relevant info on there, but the social media networks are simply better for getting information out to the majority of customers.
I'm not suggesting that event organisers shouldn't use the social networks. That would be utterly stupid. What I'm saying is that "the socialz", or worse, one social network in particular, should not be the only means of access to information. Anyone who was hypothetically relying on twatter, for example, would now be somewhat buggered.
FWIW, the information on the EJC is not solely available via farcebook. However, https://ejc2023.org/ is badly ranked on Google and without specifying the year in your query, it's roundly beaten out by last year's convention.
Simon
Ideally information should be available outside of social media. I wouldn't assume that everyone has the knowledge needed to create a website, though. (I don't. I could probably learn how to do it, but it would take some time.) Then you would have to host it somewhere, which I assume isn't free. For big events like the EJC I assume the cost is negligible, but for smaller events with a low budget (or no budget) it might not be. And you need someone who knows how to do it, keep in mind that most events are organized by volunteers.
Now, making a website that has a good ranking on Google... That complicates it even more.
Giocoleria da diporto - - Parent #
TwitterX? The same nazis you'll find on Truth and Gab.
To find gangrenous communists where should I go instead?you won't reach people like me who refuse to even have a mobile phone.
Is the problem any signal that a device you own can emit, which allows someone else to have some information about you?
I mean, do you accept the radio?
Just joking! 😀
