An excellent question!
For up to 7 ball juggling, I use size Medium (67mm), 90g with an 85% fill.
For 3 ball juggling: Size 3XL, 155g and 90% fill.

I'll have these balls with me so you can see what a set looks like after a year. 😉

I would like to start training 8 and 9 balls, so I am considering another set in either S (64mm) or XS (61mm) but I haven't worked out what I want yet. I thought I might find some free time at the stand to have a play...

Hello All!

I'm an engineer in my late 40's from Norfolk (UK) and only discovered there was more to jugging than the 3-ball cascade about a year ago.

Currently failing to progress 5-ball cascade from 15-20 catches to something more solid, trying to learn club flow styles inspired by Jeremiah Johnston, and playing with multiplex club starts a la Lauri Koskinen.

Oh, and have just designed and prototyped some lightweight collapsible travel clubs. Not exactly consumer quality, but they work for me.

Will be at Thrown Together later this month, as well as BJC 2027.

Jugglequip - UK Rep

Hi All,
I just wanted to announce that Jugglequip now has a UK rep... me!

I will be bringing the Jugglequip stand to as many UK juggling conventions as I can.
This includes the custom infinities display where you can see and handle the different sizes, fills and weights to help you specify your own custom balls.

Why?
In 2025, I attended the EJC Papendal specifically so that I could try the different sizes and fill levels so that I could order my own set of infinities. I stand by them as a quality product and so wanted to make it easier for UK jugglers to get access to them.

Hello everyone my name is Ezra and I am new here. I have been juggling for 5 years and I am from Vermont. This past summer I coached juggling for the first time at camp Circus Smirkus. I have never been to a juggling festival but I plan to in the future and I am interested in going to the Boston one in the spring. Over the last year I have been primarily focused on improving as a ball juggler and as of late I am working on improving my base patterns, 5 ball siteswaps, 4 and 5 ball shower patterns, and learning b97531. This year I hope to flash 6 balls one hand. I have also been pursuing blind juggling recently and am trying to break my personal record of 11 minutes.

A few Thrown Together updates:
(a) Sean Gandini will give a video lecture on 35 Years of Gandini Juggling at the Thrown Together convention;
(b) t-shirts can be seen and bought on the Juggling Edge booking system. The price before Oct 1st is £20. Unlike many conventions, our low entry price stays low to the event. However, we can’t take too much of a risk on t-shirt production so ordering those early if you can afford to, really helps. We’re also happy too, of course, if you buy convention tickets early (and heartened at how many people are buying Hero ones).
(c) We’ve some great juggling workshops at the weekend (not on the website are ones by Sean Gandini and Jason Perry), but are light on Diabolo, poi, hula-hoop etc. Workshops in basic skills are wanted, not only advanced ones. Thank you for the news. At this years EJC I have been asked where Rumpel was, as he was an integral part of EJCs in the past and we had not heard of him in years. I met him in Lublin 2010 at the convention and he was such a kind and thoughtful person. The Rumpel marathon shoes were not my cup of tea though, but I respected them for all the joy they brought to so many people. Sad to hear that he passed away.

It seems with the advent of the painfully distributed communications channel competition that managing large scale social messaging is always going to be a headache.

Instead of working out how to limit the number of platforms supported in order to make it easier to manage the process manually, it might be an idea to approach this by looking at ways to build an maintain a social media distribution platform driven from a universally accessible website with no requirement for user accounts to access.

As the central coordinating body of EJC admin and continuance, it seems like the sort of job that the EJA is best placed to coordinate.

There are a range of tools that handle social media/messengering integrations but alas from what I have seen in the last 20 minutes of research - nothing that does them all. There are however a few tools for some of the services mentioned here:

I suspect there are other tools out there which could be incorporated into a wider EJA service to host EJC websites each year with a maintained set of background systems that can disseminate messages to many communication platforms while providing an easy to use front end for organisers to use to post content/updates.

For long format information articles posted on the website with an update on a blog with a link to the relevant page.
For short format messages direct to blog for immediate announcements during the event or in the lead up.
All blog posts automatically forwarded to all the different platforms that can be managed or are requested.

We got lucky with the timing at Ptuj.

Word of mouth would still be the primary dissemination method, but being able to have something in writing helps to prevent "message drift".

We wouldn't be looking for something that 75% of attendees would see. If we even capture 10% with high quality information (not trying to be understood in an echoey hall) that could help spread the information within friendship groups that could really help.

Convention organising teams have gone too heavily towards instagram for disseminating information, which I hate (the non linear timeline is especially bad for information that needs to be timely and also may need to be referred back to), so I am looking to give actionable advice as part of my feed forward document (which is currently over 4000 words!)

Useful to note, thanks, regarding the upper limit.

Given the number of attendees at an EJC, the proportion of them who are WhatsApp users, I don't think that a limit of 1000 would be an issue; but its probably the sort of thing that the EJA should poll to decide between Signal and Telegram.

Running 4 (including email) ways of disseminating urgent information is a bit much - one is too likely to be forgotten.

I think that the logistics of setting up and testing a broadcast sms system where the majority of numbers would be international would be too onerous for convention organisers given the relative ease of other methods.

We discovered the limitations of that approach with a site with many halls and different camps.

I do prefer the low tech solution where possible (as seen by how I disseminated bad weather information at the BJC this year), but having a planned-for solution for dispersed sites rather than a scrambled-for one is my goal.

I see it the same way, the most effective way is to be loud and visual with a megaphone. How did they do it in the 90ies or early 2000s? People juggle, relax, cook, sleep. They do not always look at their phone. Even a signal group with 1000 people won't reach a 1000 people. People will inform each other via word of mouth. You can have a digital communication infrastructure but I guess that it is only a multiplier. I rarely look at my phone on conventions. But that is just me. We are doing a physical activity that is circus.

Thanks for your thoughts, Dee. You communicated the weather situation in Ptuj via word of mouth after the diabolo battle and people were running around at the campsite and informing people. I think it is important to have a communication system for people who feel responsible to spread the information. Signal is a viable option for that.

Something to consider is that Signal groups are capped at 1000 people. While I prefer Signal to Telegram, I don't think it's the right choice here (at least not without having extra groups if the first fills up which is a pain for organisers to send to all of them and share the new link broadly if the first fills up).

Asking for phone number at registration and sending a broadcast SMS (not free but probably not that expensive using a service) might be a good option for emergencies.

I don't use WhatsApp or Signal. I also no longer attend large events, but if I did then the most reliable way to get such information to me would be via a Telegram channel with postings restricted to admins and to make sure that postings are infrequent enough that users won't be tempted to mute it.

Communication channels during large (and long) juggling conventions

Its been quite a while since I've been active on here, but I was browsing through some posts regarding modes of communication, and having alternatives to Meta run options.

As part of quite a long feed forward document that I've been creating (feedback is essentially pointless for an EJC team!) I've been thinking about how to communicate urgently with convention goers for emerging situations such as bad weather.

This year, messages were sent via a WhatsApp channel and via email to all who had provided an email address to register. However, some of those emails went to spam, and others went through low priority filters, so people did not receive a notification regarding the email message.

Do people have a suggested alternative, or would this still be considered sufficient as it does provide an alternative to Meta.

Would offering to have comms channels on both Signal and WhatsApp provide sufficient coverage (in addition to email) - as both of these platforms have the option to have a "broadcast only" group - so that only messages from admins can be posted (avoiding overload). Only offering Signal (over WhatsApp) would mean that many would have to download another app, and one that they are not familiar with.

It’s when one siteswap kind of fills the contours of another; one goes high where the other one goes low. For example 441 and 522 are duals to each other.
You get the dual by subtracting a siteswap from its period times 2, and then flipping it backwards. So for 504, you would subtract each throw from 6, making the dual 261. Patterns can also be their own dual, like 531.

Origin of Duals?

I noticed the juggle wiki page on dual siteswaps doesn’t note any origin for the idea. Does anyone know who might have come up with/developed the concept?

I prefer lists like jugglingedge does. I did not know about the site you were linking that site I found was also a globe. But I do not remember and have browsing history turned off.

I do not know about the tokens from french conventions. Those I participated in normally use helloasso to register and pay for the conventions.

I am happy that many conventions nowadays use pretix developped by ccc people as it is mature software that you can host yourself. However we in Hamburg still use a system we coded in 2014/2015 without AI.

jugglingmap.org reminds me of the old globe applet from the IJDb! As you suggest though they need to implement an automated system to prompt updates coupled with a way that flags old data like we use on the Edge. Link rot is a huge problem in the club space.

As for the other project are you thinking of https://juggling-convention.com? I noticed this site earlier in the year. It looks nice, has a lot more features than the Edge such as built in sitemaps, programs, place to organise carpooling etc. Looks like a chap named Pierre from France has built the site using Claude Code.

Does anyone know what the AFJ token payments is about? Seems to be significant enough to be included as a search parameter but only used for a few festivals. Hoping it's not some cryptocurrency scheme entering the festival circuit.

Sure, the filter events list form at the bottom of the events page now has a Duration field.

You can enter the following formats where N is an integer:

N will return events of exactly N days
N+ will return events that are N days or longer
N- will return events that are N days or shorter
>N events longer than N days
<N events shorter than N

There is https://jugglingmap.org/ which was filled with circus during the EJC. I like the feature of jugglingedge to get an email reminder so that information stays up to date.

Also another project has been started to have an alternative for the events of jugglingedge. I do not remember the site. But I do prefer information in a text representation like it is on this site.

I'd like to filter the events also by length. I'd rather don't attend events that are shorter than 3 days.

Also it would be nice to combine multiple filters at once. I.e. "Europe and >=3 days".

Future EJC news:

For jugglers unable to attend the EJA General Assembly at EJC Ptuj this year, the following were selected to host the European Juggling Convention in the next few years:

EJC 2028 will be in Espinho (a small city on the coast 15 miles south of Porto), Portugal organised by the team from EJC Ovar in 2024.

EJC 2029 will be in Lublin, Poland, organised by the team from EJC Lublin 2023, 2017 & 2012. Lublin will be joint European Capital of Culture 2029 and it is expected this means there will be lots of resources to support juggling and circus arts in Lublin in 2029.

There was no news about the date or location of EJC 2027 in the Azores as the EJA had been unable to get a response from the EJC 2027 organisers. The Azores team took over EJC 2027 at short notice after the Bruneck team found they were unable to host EJC 2027 in Bruneck due to venue. difficulties.

Juggling is a highly complex ado in my understanding - when i say 'pattern', i actually think of one distinct of its many variations and geometries and distortions, but most of all including the juggler, his hands, handcircles, handholding, handmovement, but also posture, countermovements, bodymovement; kind of synonymous to 'ado' or 'act' of juggling this pattern and all that's required to make it happen, physics, geometry, body, anatomy, movement & dynamics.
i see endless dimensions and nonlinear dynamics, and open at the top if also considering combining juggling with innumerable other things or activities ( joggling. while swimming, skating, a s.o. with, while this & that ) ... endless.

Dual-Gravity / Multi-dimensional juggling

So I've been exploring the idea that a juggling pattern's state is basically a piece of the pattern that doesn't move through time, meaning it lacks one dimension that the full pattern has; The state drops from four (3 space 1 time) to three (no time dimension). This made me wonder if the concept could be extended any further. There are two ways that I can think of to represent a 5-dimensional juggling pattern, and I thought I would explain my thought process for both.

First of all, how can such a thing be conceptualized? I decided it would be best to look at how adding a dimension alters a state, to see how it might alter a full juggling pattern. Before adding time, a state is a static form. Afterwards, gravity appears and the height of the objects decays over time. So one way we might conceptualize adding a dimension to juggling is by adding another source of gravity.
If you add a source of gravity that pulls objects towards yourself, your throws now have to account not only for the height of a throw, but also its depth. A basic cascade, tilted away from the juggler, might be written as {33}. And because you now have an extra layer to play with, you can actually juggle two patterns completely simultaneously; one pattern is thrown when objects are at height 0, and the other is thrown when they are at depth 0. So {35}{33}{31} viewed from the front would look like a cascade, but viewed from above would look more like 531. Obviously, executing this kind of pattern would require very precise hands.

But if that's not a good enough representation, you might do a little bit better by using hyperspheres instead of normal spheres. In the same way that a sphere passed through a 2-dimensional plane would appear as a circle that grows and shrinks, a 4-dimensional sphere passed through our 3-dimensional plane would likely look like a sphere that grows and shrinks. Therefore, you could imagine a system where your objects change size as they are thrown. The effects of this are much the same as adding another source of gravity, but the pattern remains confined to the wall-plane we like to work with. One pattern thrown at height 0, the other at an arbitrary size 0.
As a trade-off, though, this form of juggling is much harder to simulate in our world. I would love to see a program that can animate these kinds of patterns, but of course I don't have the skills to create one.

Beyond that, I feel like there should be other ways of thinking about higher-dimensional forms of juggling that make more sense progressively. For example, when state is extended it begins to changes over time, but with the systems I've constructed the base pattern can remain exactly the same, just with another aspect added on top. Is that the natural result of adding a dimension or is there a better way to think of it? I'd love to hear ideas.

Five club cascade tips.

I thought I'd start a thread, because I was asked in another one. Feel free to add your own tips. There may well be other older threads, and there's probably good stuff in the Internet Archive's backup of the IJDb compendium, but here we go...

Before each run, make sure your feet are parallel, and your shoulders and hips are all in the same parallel. (No twists in your body.) Stand up straight. If your shoulders are raised or tense, lower them.
Breathe out as you release your first throw. Breathe in again after 10 catches. Start again at catch 20, repeat.

Have at least 3 practise sessions a week. Preferably more. Stop if you're getting tired. Finish each session with a clean run. (Even if you have to drop back to just a flash.)
(I often used to start a practise session with a single short run of 522 with 3 clubs, with the twos in motion as though I was throwing them. (Fakes.) It looks silly, but it gets you used to throwing doubles in the right place, with the right arm motion timing .)
Make sure your first five throws are in an even rhythm.

For each catch, make sure your first movement of your hand is DOWNwards. This will help to increase dwell time - the time spent holding the club between each throw. This means you are more in control of the next throw, as you are in control of the path of the club for longer.
Remember to breathe.

Try to keep your elbows tucked in to your sides.
Observe where your throws are going (...wrong?). Is your left hand throwing too far forwards? Wide? Low? (Try to) correct that in your next run.

Are the clubs going up in the right path? (For me, my pattern was best when the clubs went up directly in front of the opposite eye. YMMV.) Are both sides the same?
Think about your hands' position/angle when throwing. (e.g. I tried to have my palms facing upwards on each release.) Are they both the same? They should be.

There are lots of minor points to remember, and it's *really* hard to remember all of them all of the time. The more you practise, the more some of them will start to become muscle-memories. If you feel like you've had a few bad runs, or a bad session, stop and breathe, and run through all the things on your check-list. Has one of them dropped out of your mind? Pick it up.

Simulating Rhythmic Catches notation system

Hi guys, long time no speak (here at the edge).

Frustrated with the limitations of siteswaps, I wrote a new notation system 4 years ago that generates ladder diagrams, which I call Rhythmic Catches (RC). I theorized it could be useful for simulating more complex patterns, but I did not have the ability or free time to write such a simulator, so it remained just a theory.

But this week, I tried to vibecode it, with much more success than anticipated! It's still in early stages, but the tool below allows you to:

Parse RC notation
View the pattern as a editable table
View the pattern as a ladder diagram
Play the pattern in a simulator
Simulate throws, hits and holds from hands, feet, knees, heads, elbows, and many more body parts
Convert siteswap to RC
Try out loads of example patterns, some with reference videos
Learn about how RC works through an extensive explainer and a helpful cheatsheet
And much more!

It's still a work in progress, the siteswap converter is not yet complete, the animator makes some mistakes, and I'd love to add my other notation system for body throws (IMBO) to this tool too, but that's gonna take a bit more work.

Just saying hi as I'm a new addition to the site and added the club I run on Sundays in Melbourne Australia. Thrown Together, 23 - 25 October, London update

Just giving you a heads-up that tickets for the Thrown Together shows at Jacksons Lane will go on sale in two weeks, on 22nd July on https://jacksonslane.org.uk, with the rest of their autumn season.

There are only 144 tickets available for each show, the great majority costing £15, so early booking is advisable. Each show has only one performance, three are UK premieres (and ON's first time in Europe). There is no guarantee any of these can be seen in the UK again. All shows are great for adults and suitable for audiences aged 7+. Tickets for this will go on sale by mid-August - I'll let you know the on-sale date as soon as I can.

Standard prices for the convention weekend (without Jacksons Lane shows) will be £40 (concession price available), age 25 plus; £25 age 16-24; £15, age 8-15; Free, 0- 7. Day tickets will also be available.
