I'm pragmatic, and I understand that event organisers want to get their message out to as many people as possible. It makes sense for them to post on the corporate social media sites. I am not asking or telling them not to do that. But I am asking them to understand that those sites these days are increasingly closed data silos, requiring web surfers to have an account with them to even view posts there. This effectively shuts out a large number of people from reading posts there: anyone who - for whatever reason* - doesn't want to have an account with [FB/IG/TikTok/Twitter/whoever].

Event organisers should always ensure that they put their information on an open web source. Typically their own web page. If they make it the default behaviour to post on their own website FIRST, they can *then* make a post on any/all social media sites saying, for example...

"Hey folks, we have news! Check out our site for the latest pre-registration prices for CoNvenTioN. Don't miss out! [web page URL]"

If organisers of smaller events might say "oh, we don't have anyone to build a website for us", then okay - but you can get a wordpress site for free at https://wordpress.com/ . A basic website with text and images is perfect to get your message across to *everyone*.

(If you do have a Wordpress site, either on wordpress.com or self-hosted, then you should seriously consider installing the ActivityPub plugin. It automatically pushes every post/page out to the fediverse for you. (Mastodon/Pixelfed/Lemmy/PeerTube, etc) And if you're not familiar with what the fediverse is, it's social media that's free from Big Tech billionaires, ads and algorithms. Perhaps you have somebody near to you that juggles infinitys so you could try if they work for you. They are usually at EJCs where you could try them. They let you configure weight, filling and size.

Hey, I want to buy a 14 ball set for numbers juggling, but I don't know what to exactly

get. I want to make sure that I can hold 7 balls in each hand to flash 14 balls.

Is there anyone who has any advice? I already have a 9 ball set that I train with.

I use gballz e8 70g minis. But I want slightly bigger, also how underfilled do they need to

be?

Estimating from the other direction, if about 1 in 10 people can flash 3 balls, there are about 8 billion people alive, and the number drops off by 90% for each extra ball, you might guess 8 x 10^9 x 10^-8, or about 80 people. Which is surprisingly close!

Has anybody seen photos of the site of the EJC 2026 in Ptuj? Are there inside photos of the gyms? Where is the information? Here [0] is only text, even not mentioning the size of the gyms. The text: "24h Hall, Day Hall, Acro/Aerial Hall, and Kids Hall" reads for me like there is 1 gym open 24/9 and the other gym only for the day and closes at night. Also there will be a Acro/Arial hall and a kids hall. I am a bit sad that there is so little information. Does anybody know more?

I wrote an email to the EJA:

Hello,

my name is momo and I started in the circus scene in 2009. I have organized some conventions and travelled a lot for circus events through Europe.

The circus scene is my happy place. I really enjoy this place and would love to have more people experiencing circus by trying it out themselves. Not consuming but creating and training.

EJCs are the heart of the circus scene in my opinion. They are a parallel universe for 9 days for the attending people. I helped setting up 3 EJCs over the years (2012, 2013, 2016) and it was a pleasure to see how people seek solutions for challenges they encounter on the way.

After telling a bit about myself I would like to bring up my point.
Every EJC has a website https://ejc2026.org as an example. The website is controlled by the organisation team of the corresponding EJC. Every EJC must provide news about their event on that website. That should be the primary source of information. Not any silos of proprietary companies. You can mirror that information on such services, but it should be on the website of the convention at first and be accessible. The accessability is also mandatory in the EU [0] since last year.

I have talked with organizers of the Papendal EJC 2 years before the EJC taking place that information should not be on instagram first. To follow information about the event you needed an instagram account. They did the opposite and mirrored instagram via embedding in the EJC website. This does not help.

The EJA and the EJCs must use their own websites to provide information and not force people to use proprietary platforms.

This year the announcement for the ticket shop opening was on instagram and not on the website. I was on a circus convention and was able to buy a ticket from the second batch because people from that event where being informed via instagram.

This is no communication strategy. This is no sovereignity. This is not a way of creating a community. This makes me furious for the past years.

I know from own experience that organizing even a smaller convention for 500-700 people takes a lot of work. But in every EJC there should be tech-savy people that can put information concerning the event on their website.

Sorry for that harsh criticism. But the situation is just unbearable. I am happy to have a discussion about the topic.

UK folks - the TV variety show The Good Old Days is back on BBC iplayer and broadcast at the moment, looks like 5 episodes from the 70s being repeated this time round. Often one or two specialty or circus acts an episode.

(The City Varieties itself is still going as a theatre but the occasional variety shows it hosts are very much third artist syndrome at this point, copies of copies of the heyday of variety. Only worthwhile for specific acts you know you want to see, imho.)

w...also in the vid your right elbow is out more ( in consequence of that posture of yours ).
If it's due to an anatomic asymmetry ( e.g. skoliosis, kyphosis, uneven or torn or twisted pelvis and-or spine ), which it looks like, I wouldn't recommend forcing symmetry, but finding what's most comfortable for you - could be e.g. doing with your right foot behind, ( torso then somewhat twisted ), or e.g. inclining yourself to that side with left foot on tiptoe. Another approach would be to exercise turning\twisting your torso only, both ways round with, say, 5b that you've hotten down already; and maybe also swaying from side to side ( changing weight from foot to foot ) without turning\twisting your torso, the pattern staying within the fixed frontplane. These exercises should imo "emancipate" your juggling from being constrained \ restrained \ tweaked by your posture, and provide more control over that dimension.

With 9b your last balls are mostly lower than the early balls up. ( it's not so much with 8b ) . . . as if you'd be lacking the force to get on height. In that case, or anyway, it might be a good idea to not get into debt of height with so high early balls, but start either these lower in order to save some effort for the later balls, or even overall the whole pattern lower ( when you feel speedy ).

I'd also suggest to not do seven, eight and nine too much, but make 7 or 9 your priority and spend notably less on the other amounts. Rather 7, because you seem to be exhausting yourself a lot on 9, with little gain for hard effort that would maybe be better invested in progressing with 7. Or else try to get effort out of your 9b by doing lower, and-or by stopping launches on early bad throws.

I recently used to do two runs of exercises to "define" every single first throw out of 9 well:
• stop on each, do only the first, first two, first three, ... with focus only on, and aiming the one in question well,
• same, but go on throwing the rest ... keeping focus on the ball in question, tracking where it flies within the whole pattern launched. ( this is soas to not learn to stop too much by the first exercise but doing that throw while going on throwing in its "original" context so to say ).

I’ve just watched your most recent YouTube video, I think one thing was noticeable straight away which may explain your left arm strain.

Your right shoulder hunches higher than your left.

This asymmetry means your throws aren’t the same height, and your left arm has to work harder trying to maintain the height as a result.

This is noticeable for your patterns with 5 balls or more, if you watch the peaks of the throws in the video you can see it.

Try concentrating on your posture, and with both hands throwing from the same height, and do that with all the numbers you’re working on.

Fixing this with 5 will help your 7. Fixing it with 7 will help your 9

I think when you've got a consistent strain like that one of the best things to do is analyze your throwing technique. A lot of times there's more tension than there needs to be, especially with numbers juggling. If it's in the shoulder you might isolate your elbows when making attempts, or if it's the wrist you might try to stiffen the wrists a bit. Things like that, depending on what parts of your arms are taking the brunt of the stress.
And if you do find something to tweak with your technique, it's good to practice it with lower numbers as well as when attempting the nine.

Thanks for all the information. Now there is one thing I would like to know, it's how do

you do not hurt yourself when trying to qualify 9 balls? I always stretch before I juggle

but my left arm always gets so torn up. it's been 4 days since I last hurt my left arm

from trying to train for a 9 balls qualify and it still hurts. So I have taken of 4 days

of numbers juggling. I know if I stop my practice sooner I will not hurt myself but I just

can't, because i'm so into it. That is the problem I have on my hands. Any tips on what

to do?

Hi & welcome!
Guess, the first hurdle is having two more balls in hands ( when coming from 7b ) which rearranges the whole arrangement , unless you do with floating first ball on top.
i started with smaller balls, 5,5 cm.
getting all thrown and six caught is then already a first little success.
after correcting single always the same ball(s) going astray, you'll soon get 7 gathers regularly.
from there for me it was a long journey meeting all requirements of shape, timing, aiming, tuning, and the way i launch in crescendo mode and doing a strong initial hop fromout very bent knees.
i found, that going for 8 gathers level or for rethrows sometimes aren't anyway "melted", but i have to downright intend either for making it happen.
hopefully i will before long be able to rely on automized good launches into a viable pattern allowing for rethrows into all caught.
next stage then, much more occasion to focus on aiming into pattern's top only, the simplicity of it...

guess a good deal in going for 9b is individual, depending where you come from ( 8b skipped or not; 7b level; brute force or reflecting and analysing; throwing technique rather nimble or with power; other, time invested, circumstances ).
so, be welcome to ask specific (or general) questions!

I never got beyond a barely-qualified 7-ball run, and a flash of 8, and probably 9 (can’t remember). I gave up on numbers juggling long, so I’m not the one to give you tips, I’m afraid. But good luck!

Howdy! My name is Chelsea and I'm a child of professional birthday party clowns. I learned how to juggle at a very young age and juggling with my family was one of my favorite pass times as a kid. I found this site to promote a new juggling festival located in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. It will take place at the Somatic Movement Gym located at 3703 S. Fielder Rd. Arlington TX 76015 from August 14th through 16th 2026. So if you live in the area or are willing to travel MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW! Hi all: long time juggler, first time poster here with a lot of free time on my hands at the moment.

I recently bought the domain https://juggling.club and wanted to use to for something useful and maybe even productive. My initial thought was to provide webspace for circus clubs and societies if needed, think https://leeds.juggling.club or whatever the people want.

It looks like there are a couple of places out there that offer a similar service - Juggling Edge being one of them. But I'm not sure how well known or well used these are. I'm hoping to talk to some people to see if there is anything new I could offer. Depending on feedback and user expertise, I could offer a simple webpage with club information, whole websites, or anything in between.

I am not wanting to charge for this - I simply want to offer something fun and easy.

Also happy to dole out email addresses if people want them.

I also see there is a desire to bring back juggling.tv which is something I would happily be a part of. I have played with setting up federated sites before, although storage and cost for such a project would make it difficult. I'd be open to join and discussion around this if it is still going on.

Thanks for the one ball one clap idea, I hadn’t seen that one before.

While meditating on that I realized that juggling two balls in one hand and slapping my thigh in rhythm produces the sound of one hand clapping.

Thank you everyone. I'm just lost now. Not even that decent at 4 ball juggling I just realized. Maybe I'm just not built for juggling. Especially with my tendency to cry when frustrated, learning juggling is basically picking at a scab on a wound in hopes of removing it completely. Atleast I've learned to do 3 balls and 4 balls (not that good tho), so maybe juggling will just go on my list of skills I am painfully mediocre at. I'll probably keep practicing but I don't know how long I'll keep up with it.

if you really dearly want to go for achievements with juggling ( and not it be like a replacement for anything going bad in your life ), then there's no need to be deceived: find out, what makes you frustrated, which throws or catches, how pattern collapses, if losing concentration or coming into strenuous ado, outer conditions e.g. balls rolling under the sofa, ... anything taking the fun out of it.
you then mostly always follow that self set task to eliminate the bad out of your sessions ( no free braincells for any frustrating feelings ), - guided by your goal ( and be that only to cherish what you can do comfortably without any bad ).
often, also, it happens, that when trying sth differently, you horribly blunder on doing so for being completely out of concept and it tears you down the more ... but: that attempt was better than anything you were doing before! Because you had the right thing in mind,the right way to do it ( e.g. focus on this or that, e.g. a distinct problem ball gotten well, e.g. scooping well, ... ), and a glimpse on what the good ado and pattern will be like. which is then actually a hurdle taken, a great door opened and motivating!

Information should be first available at the official website. Why is #EJA not capable of making this mandatory? Why do you force people to use such platforms, when you are in control of your own websites?

I really feel frustrated. Every year crucial #information is kept in proprietary silos of huge companies instead of being shared on infrastructure you own.

Beginners feel like they have to go fast to "get all the throws in", which can result in hurried throws - the hands tend to creep up and up. It's an understandable reaction, but is counterproductive. To give yourself more time in the pattern, after each catch, make sure you move that catching hand *down* before doing the next throw. This will mean your hand is holding the ball for longer during the course of each throw, which in turn means you are more in control of the throw. Each throw should begin with your hand *well below* your elbow. This should result in better accuracy of your throws - both height and direction. (You can practice this with 3 and 4 balls, to help you get a muscle memory of how this works.)

And sorry, but ceiling height (depth) is not your friend. The pattern needs the space it needs.

Also, don't be tempted to think "was today better than yesterday?" in measuring your progress. 5 ball juggling is a long haul, so think in weeks, or even months.

Stick with it, it's worth it.

Frustration is natural, you’re trying to learn something new and difficult (but achievable!).

You won’t make progress when you’re frustrated, so be kind to yourself and take breaks.

I’m no expert and I don't juggle much any more (I just tried 5 for the first time in about a decade - my best run today was a shaky 23 catches) but my general tips for 5 balls are:

* Throw height: put your arm straight up directly over your head, that’s a good height to aim for.

If your ceiling is low enough that you’re touching it, and you don’t have anywhere else - try kneeling on the floor!

* Relax your shoulders and lower your throwing position, your hands should be throwing at or below elbow height. A lot of people find themselves tensing up, hunching and their hands creep up to shoulder height, this gives you no room for corrections (and makes your ceiling height problem worse!)

* It’s slower than you think it is - don’t rush the pattern. The rhythm is the same as 3 balls, you really don’t need to go “fast”

* Vary your 3ball pattern a lot. Make it low, high, narrow, wide, speed it up, slow it down, move the pattern left/right. Throw with your hands high, throw with your hands low.

Get very comfortable with how all that variation feels, it will solidify your foundation skills and make your 5 easier to control

Oh, and stick with it! You’ll get there!

Thanks everyone for the tips. A lot of you have been telling me to throw the balls high up. However, this is almost impossible. The reason is, I live in an apartment and the ceiling is not too high. (Please don't tell me to practice outside that's like torture to me)
Another thing is I'm still getting pretty frustrated. It sort of sounds stupid but I really can't stop myself from feeling it. Regardless of me not holding my breath while practicing or telling myself and actually knowing that progress comes slowly I'll still feel those feelings.

You know how one of the first drills for learning 3 balls is to throw one ball up, clap underneath, and then catch in the other hand. Pretty much the same thing for 5. juggle 3, keep the rhythm and flash all 3 up at 5 ball height, (eventually clap underneath), and then carry on. Starting from both the left and from the right.

I remember that 55050 and 552 helped me learn 5, plus go higher and slower than you first think

Also, Void's advice about breathing is good, you'll find yourself holding your breath without even noticing.

I found practicing exactly n throws and catches and finishing cleanly helped, then slowly increase n over time. Always just going until you drop didn't really help me.

And be aware the difference between learning 4 and then 5 is longer than going from 3 to 4

A good advice would be to practice with friends or other jugglers. Everybody struggles in the beginning of learning a new thing. Having people around even if they are training a completely different thing helps me being inspired and motivated. A friend of mine does play hoop and playing diabolo when she is training next to me just makes the session so much more fun.

You do not have to learn a new skill in a short time. Try to have short training sessions regularly than long sessions. You will see your progress. 15 Minutes a day should be enough.

If you can throw and catch 4 times (called a flash) cleanly is much better for an ending of a training session than having 8 (called a qualify for four balls) throws where you struggle to catch them and have a lot of body movement to being able to handle it. So try to end your session with a good run.

A classic piece of advice that sounds facetious but isn't: remember to breathe. People often hold their breath without realising they're doing it. Try to remember to breathe in after 10 catches or so, then out after another 10, etc.

A common problem 4-ball learners have is that the pattern tends towards the middle, causing collisions. It sounds like you have the opposite problem. Perhaps your arm-scoops are too accentuated? Try a few runs concentrating on making your scoops wider or thinner, and seeing what difference that makes.

I am not a ball juggler. I learned 4 balls first in columns before I changed to fountains. I guess it is another challenge, but I found it easier to learn a pattern where I throw straigt up and have no circular movement. With the energy you put into that circular movement I guess your balls get thrown further out because you want to throw them around the other from the inside to the outside. So you might have to throw a bit higher, which is also difficult to throw precisely. Therefore you might first learn colums to learn to throw straight. They might appear to be more hectic because you will throw less high and move your hands not in a round pattern but on a line and therefore faster. Maybe you could try that.

Synchronous, that I mention below, feel not so appealing but also help if you want to learn four clubs as you see the different heights of the clubs and the different speeds that they turn. So you can observe 1 particular thing that you want to even out. After being able to catch 4 clubs synchronously with 20 catches my asynchronous pattern reached 100 catches.

Perhaps some ball jugglers could also answer, as I am a diabolo player.

What helped me learn to juggle 4 balls was:

* 3 ball exercises
** juggling 4 2 3 (the W pattern) with 3 balls
** juggling 2 in 1 hand holding a third ball in the other hand. When I get insecure I threw 1 ball over to the other side and do 2 in 1 hand on the other side while holding the other ball in the hand I started with.

* 4 balls
** juggling columns not fountains
** juggling synchronous to see if I throw the same height on both sides
** juggling 4 balls asynchronous
** juggling fountains as my columns got secure (100 catches)

* general advice
** stopping when the pattern gets unstable and starting from new
** making pauses (juggle for 3 mins, doing nothing for 3 mins, thinking about what I did for 3 mins, repeat)
** 15-20 minutes a day is enough

I'm pretty much just a ring juggler, and mostly passing, so this is an exciting question :)

You can do most siteswaps and patterns that people do with clubs. In fact I think doing those kinds of patterns with rings first is a great way to learn them because you can focus on the different heights and lengths of the passes without worrying about the spin. I could take several pages listing my favourites or ones to try, but it would be good to get an idea of how comfortable you are with passing siteswap notation and what kind of difficulty we're talking about. What passing stuff have you done before with 7-9 clubs/rings? You mentioned "apart from the basic 1 count, 2 count etc' - can you run 7/8/9 ring 1- and 2- count fairly well?

Another option is just tricks and different throws in 1 and 2 count, which have the advantage that you don't generally have to coordinate timing with your partner (you can just throw them and they get passes when they were expecting them). An example is in 7 ring 1-count one person can choose to throw a high self (would be a self triple with clubs) instead of a pass, and the other person just gets a hold (so they only pass when recieving a ring and at some point they'll be missing one, so don't make that pass - it's reactive).

Happy to provide ideas and patterns if you can give me an idea of what kind of thing you're after :)

Hello everyone. I run the Nuneaton Juggling Club. (Between Leicester, Birmingham and Coventry)
I started this club in 1994 and have taught many people juggling, unicycling, hula hoop etc since then. If you are ever in the area on a Friday come along as join us between 5pm and 6.30pm.
