Ooh, that's half marvellous that is.
But only half, since you are still utterly profligate with white space. Had you thought of arranging the headings into vaguely thematic groups? E.g. Talk, Listings, Latest, Tools.

They are organised in exactly that way! If you work from top to bottom through the columns from left to right or just have a very narrow screen.
I'm using CSS3 columns & media queries to create a responsive layout with as little code as possible.
Is better, less need to scroll down than the old home page (till I logged in), but bit texty, not very exciting. Could you add the titles of the 4 most recent threads on Small Talk or Big Talk to add interest? Would a total for number of Upcoming Events or Juggling Clubs convey how much information is there? In the Latest Stuff do you want to say where people posted or does it make it too long?

I'll create some mockups with varying amounts of extra information in it over the weekend so we can see how it looks.

There is no 'top middle' the content just flows through a varying number of columns depending on the window size. There can be a big difference in the amount of content that is displayed to a user depending on how many clubs they attend, festivals they are going to. The only position I can guarantee is the top left at the moment. But I'm still only playing with ideas at the moment.
For greedy people like myself who attend many events; could the "Edit Connection" be shortened to an edit icon eg ✎ (perhaps with a mouse-over message of "edit connection") then attended events (and attended clubs) would only take up one line per event (club) and save lazy jugglers like myself from having to scroll down too much?

Great to see that you are actively working on improving the functionality!
Quite cool, but not perfect for my use yet: I only use the message board actively, and I am guessing that I am not the only one. Perhaps under 'small talk' there could be a link to the first three threads?
The 'latest stuff' column is a bit non-informative, new message posted by (...) means nothing to me.
Juggling events could perhaps list the three soonest events, juggling records the records that were updated most recently.
Now that we are talking about the website anyway: Is it perhaps time to discuss small talk & big talk again? I see (and I did myself) people post big talk the first time they come here, not realizing that everyone is hanging out in small talk anyway. Of course, big talk posts get longer attention as they stay on top of the list, but for the rest nobody is using it...
Perhaps split things up in: Discussion - Shameless self promotion (festivals+videos+whatever) or Juggling - Related topics. For me it would be easy to categorize all the current topics into these splits, I especially think the discussion - promotion split could be functional and useful :)

I like it, that could work well I think. One of the things I like about The Edge is the simplicity, it's been designed beautifully.
I've never really a fan of Big talk though. It feels like a private booth that doesn't need to be there. I replied to a sore wrists thread, couldn't post until later, by which time someone had already pretty much said everything I had said, and it was far written better too. So I ended up not contributing. I wondered if Big talk puts some newcomers off a little too. Maybe better if it was introduced later on when The Edge is busier, keep all discussion together at first. Also who's to say whether the talk is big or small anyway?
I'm going to assume you wrote "it was far written better too" to deliberately amuse people.

I've been thinking about big talk recently as well, and it's really under used, and I think it's not really hitting it's intended purpose/audience and it feels a little unloved.
Perhaps we could simplify things, clarify the site for new users etc just by dropping big talk?
I'm not a fan of splitting communities up into sub communities (discussion/promotion/etc) unless the posting volume reaches a size where doing so makes sense. The Edge isn't at that posting volume (yet!) so if we split small up further it'll just look less loved.
If you check a forum and there is a board with one category but 10 posts, it *looks* busier than a board with 5 categories with 2 posts in each.
If we were getting hundreds of posts a day then yes, splitting it up might make sense. I just don't see that we're at that point yet.
I've been thinking the same thing for a while but have been putting it off because I wasn't sure what to do with the existing content. I think I'll just chuck everything into Small talk this weekend & rename it 'forum'.
I think that's for the best.
I also think the 'if you must talk about juggling' bit should probably be reworded - feels like it might be offputting at the moment!
But that's the best slogan I've ever come up with!!!
Looks like it will be disappearing when I settle on a new index format any how.

How about trying to spark some discussion in Big talk instead of removing it? For example:
Each week there is a question posted. You can only reply to it that week and then it closes. Quickly there will be an archive of, perhaps controversial, topics discussed with thought out responses.
Topics could include: "Is the rise in prop sponsorship good for the juggling scene as a whole?" or "Could all juggling performances be improved by having a stronger narrative?"
People might feel more comfortable responding to questions than initiating a discussion.

That would need a team of people willing to post questions on a regular basis. Any volunteers?
There is no reason why this wouldn't work on Small talk. Both are excellent questions. Let's try the first one out.
