A device I have never used still influences my aesthetics.
I use X-Chat to connect to the lovely #IRC ##juggling chat. X-Chat lets me choose font and window size freely. I've been using it for a long time, and just realized that the combination of the font I chose and the window size I've dragged together makes the actual chat view show 19 lines with 85 characters each.
The first six characters are a timestap I mostly ignore, making that 79 character lines. Above, there's three lines: window title, commands, and channel topic. Below, one line for me to type into.
Which makes the part of the screen I pay attention to 23*79 characters. Is it conincidence that the VT100 had 24 lines of IBM-punchcard-inspired 80 characters, or do I spend too much time staring at things in fixed-width font, with 80 character line limits?
