A device I have never used still influences my aesthetics.

I use X-Chat to connect to the lovely #IRC ##juggling chat. X-Chat lets me choose font and window size freely. I've been using it for a long time, and just realized that the combination of the font I chose and the window size I've dragged together makes the actual chat view show 19 lines with 85 characters each.

The first six characters are a timestap I mostly ignore, making that 79 character lines. Above, there's three lines: window title, commands, and channel topic. Below, one line for me to type into.

Which makes the part of the screen I pay attention to 23*79 characters. Is it conincidence that the VT100 had 24 lines of IBM-punchcard-inspired 80 characters, or do I spend too much time staring at things in fixed-width font, with 80 character line limits?

IJDb chat room

#IJDb #chatroom

Probably the thing I mourn the loss of more than the rest of IJDb.  I met a lot of nice jugglers via that chatroom and got to meet some of them in real life too.  The frequent contact and interaction helped keep me interested in the hobby and expanded my social circles globally.  I think I am in the minority on this though :-(

A tad disappointed, but not surprised, that there was no take up of the XMPP (Jabber) chatroom: jugglers@conference.jabber.org

Maybe a future feature of the edge ?

Discuss .....

For quite a long time, the most active juggling chat room has been the finnish #juggling on IRCnet (to me, something starting with # is still not a tag). I just joined once again after the subject of chat came up on that other archaic thing via nntp, and they were actually talking about the EJC.

Yay for old, dedicated protocols!

"Yay for old, dedicated protocols!"

Like NNTP / usenet? ;-)

I've looked into php/javascript jabber chat clients in the past and didn't really find one which was workable. It's been a few years since I last looked, I wonder if the landscape has changed much.

Javelin...

Tobias - - Parent

Dunno about jabber, but one of the other strange things I do is geohashing, where the community is held together by Mediawiki and #IRC. For the latter, Mibbit seems to work pretty well, I've seen lots of interaction with new, confused users that managed to find the IRC chan via https://relet.net/data/geo/randomnick.php

I'd definitely hang around a juggling IRC chan, if anyone wants to give that a shot.

Little Paul - - Parent

If there's one on freenode.net (or if someone else can be bothered to set up services and whatnot to keep the chan open) I could probably manage to be in there for most of 10am->5pm GMT as I sit in a couple of work related channels from time to time.

I'm not sure I'm enthusiastic enough about IRC to work out how to get my client to connect to anything that's not freenode though.

I am signed in to jabber most of that time as well, so I *guess* I might be able to hang out in a jabber chatroom if I could work out how...

Tobias - - Parent

All right, the edge seems to be back...

freenode has interesting channel registration policies, but irc://irc.freenode.net/##juggling should be fine, if I understand them correctly. I've registered that one. Single-hash #juggling itself is registered to (but not used by) one Xahlee, probably in violation of freenode policies as I understand them.

Sorry, can't get the irc:// link to work.

What client are you using ?

Basically you just need to join jugglers@conference.jabber.org chat room.  Essentially I think it is just a matter of announcing your presence in the XMPP sense.

I'm using Pidgin and it was dead easy to set up a connection.

plus, XMPP is allowed from work, IRC not so much

Little Paul - - Parent

I'm using pidgin. For some reason it was complaining that it wasn't a valid conference at work yesterday, but I'm working from home today and it seems fine.

So, I'm in the Jabber chatroom at the moment. IRC next...

Little Paul - - Parent

OK, I'm sat in ##juggling on irc.freenode.net as well now.

Dylan - - Parent

Wow really? I've tired to jump on the chat at IJDB a few times but no one is ever on... Maybe it's just the different time zones as I'm from Australia, but it just seemed quite inactive to me? I'd love an active juggling chat, though in the way this forum is set out it can basically be used as a discussion/chat anyway =D.

Bringing this thread back up, I think it'd be nice even to have a little chat box at the top of the small talk forum perhaps? Just one that people can chat on if they're sitting on that page.
Does this seem like something that people would use?
And if so, does it seem do able? Like would it be easy to implement into the site?

The Void - - Parent

Small Talk IS a chat room.

emilyw - - Parent

not a very chatty chat room though, as it lacks the auto-update feature that Facebook has, or that other place.

mrawa - - Parent

Small talk is more a forum than a chat room. It'd be quite nice to have a small chat window at the bottom of the page that just had a rolling conversation. You don't even have to keep a history, maybe just the last 10 - 20 submissions.

Little Paul - - Parent

I've been chatting to a few people about chat (and am spending a lot of time in the ##juggling irc channel and the jugglers@conferences.jabber.org jabber rooms mentioned above - if anyone wants to join me)

I think my aim would be a single chatroom which is accessible via IRC, Jabber and a web interface so that everyone can use whatever client they want.

Adding a chat web interface directly to The Edge which ties into all this background stuff looks like it might be a lot of effort, but there are 3rd party site out there which could be linked to that would do it for us.

I've started a big talk timer and once I've had a chance to pull my thoughts together I intend to write up how to get to the stuff which is available *now* and some ideas for "easy win" approaches to adding web based chat in the first instance as a proof of concept.

Then, the much bigger chunk of work which is "a chat box directly on the small talk page"

barnesy - - Parent

Do both seem to have acitivity?

I failed to get Jabber working when I had a quick look. Am I supposed to pick a server then set up an account on that or are accounts centralised?

barnesy - - Parent

Well I've got ##juggling working so I'll see how that goes. Spent too long trying Jabber without much success so advice would help!

Little Paul - - Parent

I think the most we've seen so far in one go is 4 people, but the irc channel has been around for less than a week so it's early days.

Tobias - - Parent

For all of who want a web interface for everything, try: https://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=%23%23juggling&uio=d4

I am afraid you'll have to copy and paste the url, I cannot get the edge to recognise the entire thing as a link.

Tobias - - Parent

and yes, freenode does suggest putting that into an iframe ;)

Little Paul - - Parent

or just click on https://tinyurl.com/cdh5efe

you have no idea how hard I fought with myself not to make that link to a certain deagostini publication

Orinoco - - Parent

I just put a slash between the .net & ? which seems to do nicely.

As for the rest I am certainly open to suggestions, but where were you all when I spent hours at a time in the chat room all by myself?

I shall await LP's Big post on the matter & see what response it gets before going further.

Little Paul - - Parent

Yay! Even the grand high commander double posts sometimes ;-)

Dylan - - Parent

+10

Orinoco - - Parent

I have no idea what you are talking about.

ahem

Kelhoon - - Parent

Barnesy,

Do you have a google/gmail account ? if so, you can use that, google talk/chat is XMPP (the new name for Jabber) based.

What client are you using to connect ?

barnesy - - Parent

OK, thanks Kel. I did wonder about Google Talk as I'm set up for that using Adium (pretty much Pidgin for OSX), so perhaps I'm pretty close to sorting it out. I'd tried the 'join group chat' option on there without success. No error though. Falling asleep right now though so will have a better look in the morning.

Kelhoon - - Parent

you're welcome

under "join group chat"  the server will be "conference.jabber.org" the room will be "jugglers", just ask in here if there are other prompts you're unsure of what to answer with.

if there is an "add chat" a la pidgin, you can add the room to your buddies list and just double click on it whenever you want to join in.

Cedric Lackpot - - Parent

I don't know enough about g33ky stuff, but cannot a third party chat app be slapped into an iframe somewhere in the Edge?

My guess is that one can, which is not the same as one wanting to.

Little Paul - - Parent

that would be one option certainly.

Kelhoon - - Parent

conference.jabber.org, not conferences.jabber.org

I have manged to get to the IRC room with my gmail account via jabber.me.uk:

user = my gmail account
room = #juggling%irc.freenode.org
server = irc.jabber.me.uk

barnesy - - Parent

ah! I was trying conferences.jabber.org not conference.

So now I think its working, only it asked me if I wanted to create a new room. Is that normal for when nobody else is in there or am I somewhere else? The window is headed juggling@conference.jabber.org

I'm quite happy with the IRC channel though, so that may yet be enough even if I'm still doing Jabber wrong.

Kelhoon - - Parent

jugglers, not juggling
