Cedric Lackpot -

A jolly little cigar box routine, from North Korea.

There's nothing particularly special here, although the guy clearly knows how to work a crowd, using only a whistle. I like how it both confirms and breaks our western stereotypes of DPRK, by being rather quaint and old fashioned on the one hand, yet liberating in its clownishness on the other. It feels faintly and cosily familiar, like a half-remembered Paul Daniels routine or something.

Terrible 'clap in time to music' audience. I expected them to be far more synchronised.

I'm going to rather generously assume that because the music feed appears to be taken from the sound desk, and the clapping appears to be recorded from the studio - that they're clapping in time with the sound they're hearing from the PA in the studio, with the associated acoustic delay.

From where they're sat, they're in time. The TV studio just hasn't compensated for the delay in the broadcast mix.

I've experienced delays like this while DJing - I played a set once where the monitor amp failed, and I was trying to mix based on what I could hear in my headphones compared to what I was hearing from the PA - and the delay in the sound reaching me from the PA was enough to throw the mix out by about the same amount as the audiences clapping.

After the first mix, I worked round it by slapping a second pair of headphones on so that they covered one ear each.

I agree that it is a sound engineering issue, you can see the effect isolated when the performer claps 3 times on his own about 6 minutes in. There is a clear delay from the movement to the sound.

I chuckled several times at the clip, the performer is certainly very expressive with a whistle. However, I remember being told years ago that if you get a volunteer up on stage you must let them leave as a hero. The biggest laughs in the audience came from the 'look how crap this guy is' bit which was a bit of a shame.

that was charming!
