I wrote another email to the EJA
Dear EJA,
I have a follow up to our conversation.
First thanks that you, the EJA, take care of that urgent situation with Brunico not being able to host an EJC next year. Hopefully the EJC can return after the construction work. Maybe in 2028; who knows?
The communication of the EJA on their website with the news posts is great. The website could benefit if there would be a top or side navigation bar that links to the news. The drop down menus are not that accessible and I consider news an integral part of the site as you, the EJA, communicate with your peers. Why not putting a news link directly next to "The association" and "The convention" and have all news accessible on one site with pagination so that people could read old news as well?
I have some criticism on implementing a news channel via whatsapp [0]. You state that it is "one of the many tools we use to keep the community informed and connected — alongside our website, social media, and newsletter."
For me it is okay to have one more way to distribute information and keep people informed. I understand that people might be interested in a service that informs them quickly on events like the EJC.
But you make a promise that is false and harms people in my humble opinion: "Your privacy is fully respected". Using services from Meta is not at all privacy respecting. Meta learns about the social graph of a person using whatsapp. They know who you interact with. Even more Meta is pushing people to upload their address book, which affects people not using Meta as well. Meta learns about your location through information such as your IP address or phone number. Meta learns when you are using the application or when you are sleeping. Even such information what phone you are using will be gathered. I think it is in the responsibility of the EJA to not promise privacy for users when advertising this service. The EJA should tell their community about the caveats that come with using that service.
What is the problem you are trying to solve with that chat channel? Is this service replacing the EJA national reperesentives role of communicating information for the EJA to their peers? Did information that was critical not spread quickly enough during events? Like the storm gusts at the EJC 2019 in Newark on Trent where the gala show had to move to the juggling hall? Or the information that more volunteers were needed at the same event?
I consider an EJC as an event where I rarely look at my mobile phone. It is an opportunity for people to enjoy their lifes without a digital companion for 9 days. The EJA should promote far more the joy of moving, doing things together and interacting with each other through juggling or communication than pushing digital dependency. An EJC is a place to train, experiment and to celebrate those parts of your identity that usually get neglected in everyday life.
Greetings,
momo.
