If you are wondering why I haven't been making changes every 5 minutes over the past week or so it's because I've been beavering away at marking individual messages as read. I've come up with a hybrid system that hopefully shouldn't impact performance too much.

You can now mark messages as read by either clicking the 'Mark as read' link in the bottom right hand corner of a message. If you have javascript enabled & your browser supports xmlhttprequest messages are marked without having to reload the page, those without will have to wait for a page refresh.

Javascript enabled people will also be able to mark messages as read by double clicking the message itself. Not sure if I'll leave this feature in or not as it breaks double clicking on a word to select it which is standard on most OSs, but it strikes me as useful for touchscreen devices, especially small screens.

I've also changed the X updated threads business to Y unread posts, which I think is more useful & easier to understand. & the 'Mark all as read' link appears on all views of Small Talk so long as you have unread posts.

Because we don't rely on a read to date anymore the 'Put this date back a day' & 'Auto update read to date' doodads are obviously now missing.

I've taken the liberty of marking all messages as read for all users based on their last read to date.

the link to Teapots on my front page has "Array" written after it in an orange bubble.

clicked through to find no arrays whatsoever and was very disappointed!
