Hey guys,
Can anyone tell me about/link me to the origin of the HLGCBS tradition??
I'm writing one in article format at eJuggle, and would love to include a little history in there ;)
It was originally started by the Madison Area Jugglers at which point it was only HLGCB, the S was added later. It was made popular by the Carmine Street Irregulars. I remember taking this info which I used for the glossary on the TWJC site from some rec.juggling posts of which I can only find one. To help with tracking down dates it was already a thing by 2003

I added the S. It was during a trip in a 12 seat van from the IJA summer festival 2004 in Buffalo down to New York City. After hearing the Banes of 12 people, I thought it was a bit depressing, especially as Adria M Moskowitz went last each time, and even her H and G and C were super real downers. Either then or later in the week chatting to other people in New York I proposed Surprise to make sure the conversations ended on an upward swing emotionally.
Surprise took a good while to stick, but now it seems like a regular part of the format.

I was vaguely aware that the S came later, as I remember seeing versions without S.
Thanks both of you for the information, I knew the Edge would be the right place to ask :D
Oh and Adria, haha, that is a name I haven't heard for a looong time!

I'm willing to bet it was something to do with her eyesight

I can't remember exactly. Ewan brought up that car ride when he visited this year, so it obviously made an impression on him too.
Her Crush was a juggler who she'd chatted with online before the festival, and when she arrived, she was expecting some romance. It didn't materialize. I won't name the juggler.
So yeah, maybe she misunderstood the format.

Now that we're discussing Adria in public anyway..:
Her website lists this quote:
"she can clearly juggle better than many good jugglers I know."

Care to share your story? ;)

Looks like it is a quote from this discussion: https://dev.juggle.org/history/discussion/archives/9278.php
I think it's great that someone has used juggling as a way to rehabilitate after a serious accident, but then (I feel) the story should be something along the lines of "I used to be disabled, but juggling helped me regain my health/abilities" and not "I'm a disabled juggler". If someone has bad eyesight and was once injured, but can now juggle 5 balls, I find them self-identifying as blind and physically disabled as a form of self promotion somewhere between dodgy to cringe-worthy.
But that was all over a decade ago. Now I'm not sure I care enough to be right or wrong on the topic.
You can google using quotation marks, you know.... https://dev.juggle.org/history/discussion/archives/9277.php
I am fairly sure I remember verbally going through HLGCB with jugglers on car drive back from a convention in 1999 so it must have been a thing before then, can't remember whether there was an S or not, just that I slightly misunderstood crush.

I give my attendees a discount if they write an HLGCBS, because I like reading them.
I'm excited about the article!

It has taken a while before it could be published, but now I'm happy to finally share it with you!

I enjoyed that very much. I think these are always fun to see from the organizers' views, as there are often those, "%$^& THIS ASPECT IS GOING SO WRONG!" which is either unshared, or quickly forgotten about by the general jugglers.

Yeah, to be aware of the organizing stuff you NEED to be in the scene, since so little is written down (except about the BJC). I tried the same by publicizing data on my blog from the NJF2013, but I've taken the blog down by now so can't get you a link, haha ;)
Interesting you think BJC is an exception. A common complaint in BJC circles is, "Not enough is written down".
Little Paul - - Parent #
I think both are true.
There is more written down about running BJCs than about most fests, but there is still much more that could be usefully written down.
There is an HLGCB(S) entry in the Tunbridge Wells Juggling Club Glossary
By looking at that glossary page on archive.org, we see that it was first added between August 6 and October 1, 2003 with the following text:
High, Low, Goal, Crush, Bane
Traditional post-convention game first started by the Madison Jugglers & was popularised with the help of the Carmine Street Irregulars. Just get together with some fellow festival attendees & share the highlight, lowlight, goal (& to what degree you achieved it), crush & bane of your convention.
And "Surprise" was added to that glossary entry sometime between March 2012 and July 2013.
