GUELPH MINI-FEST #HLGCBS

HIGH(s): Lots of 'em! Hanging out and learning from several large handfuls of great jugglers, beautiful weather, wonderful hosts, great juggling spaces, tasty sushi, fun and new juggling games, and more I'm already forgetting about. It was also super sweet to do some funky things with Matan, i.e., 2-ball-drop-from-5-into-7 from a ~30ft balcony (I was dropping, thank goodness), and running an 8 ball shower between the 2 of us via a sloped and channeled 10-foot long staircase railing. Mike ran a great workshop on advanced 3b and 4b, and I was happy to get some of the elbow stall patterns he taught. It was also great juggling with Mike outside of a workshop environment, and I will always be happy to try and absorb any and all box/shower/squeeze patterns from him any time we're in the same room.

LOW: CURRENT EXTREME MUSCLE ACHE.

GOAL: Get a decent run of 7 (just started working on it a few months ago), and was happy to have achieved it! Also, learn some new box/squeeze patterns. Also check.

CRUSH: Mike (for 3b, 4b, and all-around monster), Matan (for numbers/technical precision), Alex (for intense dedication and creativity), Avery (for insane diabolo skills and amazingly funny one-liners), and Naomi (for beautiful and innovative ring juggling/manipulation).

BANE: I APPARENTLY HAVE VERY LOW MUSCLE ENDURANCE.

SURPRISE: Home-made tomato wine is DELICIOUS!

Huge congratulations to Mike for throwing such a wonderful fest. Definitely needs to be a recurring event! And now, ibuprofen.

More Guelph #HLGCBS!

HIGH: Finally getting cross column inverted box. (Thanks Quinn!)
LOW: Missing Sunday...
GOAL: Get some good club passing in, improve numbers form a bit, and get somewhere on some tough 3 ball nonsense. I'd say all three were complete!
CRUSH: I hadn't interacted with anyone capable of doing solid club passing takeouts. Craig did some fun stuff!
BANE: The crushing sensation that everyone else has more time to practice than I do.
SURPRISE: Such a solid crew from Rochester! Super awesome!

My Guelph mini-fest #HLGCBS

High: Flashing 10 balls for the first time!
Low: Being sore after the first few hours.
Goal: Ummmm. I didn't really have a big goal going into the festival.
Crush: Mike Moore for being a ridiculous juggler, even with his eyes closed.
Bane: I can't juggle rings. I tried. They hurt.
Surprise: Going to an all you can eat sushi place. That was awesome, never been to one before.
Thank you Mike Moore for putting on a fantastic, fun festival! Hope it becomes an annual thing!

Highs
Organizing a (mini) juggling fest! Things went more or less as planned: the ~expected number of people came, the games worked out well, and people seemed to have fun.
Wathing juggling videos on the huge screen via projector. Introducing some people to the insanity that is Murakami (and Paul Lind).
The noodles were really worth buying. Noodle fencing, noodle "passing", noodle rings, noodle balancing - they were great!

Lows
Not much! I guess it was sad how few people came back for day two. Waterloo people, where you at?

Goals
Have the fest not suck - check
House the RIT people, and keep them happy - check (though surprisingly little alcohol was consumed)
Run a weird Cranium-inspired juggling game well, and have people enjoy it - check!

Crushes
The RIT people! Y'all are beast.
Emily
All of the people who asked if I needed any help with things.

Bane
Being inexplicadly sick Sunday morning. But I was practically fine by 11:00 am, so that was weird.

Surprises
Getting so much mileage out of the noodles
Happy sushi Saturday night
Nothing going horribly wrong

It would be a shame if all these HLGCBS were not tagged to the event

BJC HLGCBS

HIGH: Getting more than 30 attendees at my 5 Ball Beginners workshop at 10am on the Monday! Probably the best turnout I've had for that workshop, at the worst possible time for jugglers. Result! (If anybody would like a copy of the handout, you can download the PDF here - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/74536467/LEARN%20TO%20JUGGLE%205%20BALLS%20WORKSHOP.pdf )

LOW: Performing seriously under par in the Fight Night qualifications. I knew I wasn't playing well as we were going through, but for the life of me couldn't work out why.

GOAL: Compere BYJOTY - success. Didn't sleep a wink the night before, but seemed to go well and we kept the show rolling. Big thanks to Ieuan for giving me this opportunity the last two years.

CRUSH: Wes Peden. Nothing new, but attending the masterclass on Monday and seeing him perform just reminds me how he is on a completely different level to other jugglers. Fantastic dedication to the art, with exceptional results.

BANE: The weather. My tent stood firm, but on Monday night I laid in it for 7 hours and didn't sleep a wink. Looking back it was quite entertaining, but didn't enjoy it much at the time.

SURPRISE: In the early hours of Thursday morning, when people are trying to squeeze out the last few hours of fun before we leave, I seriously tried 6 ball half shower for the first time in ages and it was pretty solid. Will work more on it...

Overall BJC was amazing as ever, so much time spent juggling and hanging out with friends new and old! Glad I could play my small part running some workshops and compering BYJOTY. Cannot wait to relive all the memories in a month's time at Lestival - 2nd May in Leicester. Check it out in the Events section and get yourself added to the Facebook event for all the latest news - https://www.facebook.com/events/1545948065691160/

#hlgcbs #bjc2015 tag, you're it.

So what were the standout performances from BYJOTY that I missed? How many times would I have written, "too many drops" had I been in attendance?

magicalmarkwatson - - Parent

Actually, I think the drop count this year was 51? So for 8 acts, that's an average of 6 drops per act? Some more, some less of course. But we've had it much worse in other years I feel...
For me, the final two acts (which both won silvers as no gold was awarded) of Luke Davies and Eddy Bacon were very good but for completely different reasons. Luke pulled off an incredibly high level of skill for BYJOTY, he is a very good young juggler and this being his first ever convention I believe he managed to turn a fair few heads in the hall! Eddy's was an incredibly slick contact juggling routine, he'd put a lot of effort into his costume and make-up choices and it worked well.
I would also mention our only female competitor this year, Helena Berry, with a wonderful ball foot-juggling act making use of a table. In the tech run, she was almost flawless and I had put her as a strong competitor. Unfortunately she made a few more drops in the actual show which I think cost her an award, but she is definitely a young circus performer to keep our eyes on!

British Juggling Convention 2012 HLGCBS

H: Entering BYJOTY and getting a pretty good reception from the crowd. Didn’t win anything, but it was great performing in a proper big top alongside some really great young jugglers!

L: Waking up in the middle of the night with a cold nose – it happened several times!

G: Enter BYJOTY – yes!
Run a couple of successful workshops – yes! (Anybody with feedback on my 4 and 5 ball beginners workshops? Good and bad, all is useful!)

C: The Gandini Juggling Project - didn't it have to be? All of their performances were incredible, and I loved Smashed!

B: I had to miss a few workshops I really would have liked to go to due to my involvement in BYJOTY – ah well, I can’t enter again anyway and I’m very glad I did.

S: Getting to play Gladiators late on Saturday night with some of the Gandini jugglers, Tony Pezzo, Luke Wilson and Francoise! Great fun!

H: The black & silver disco: a top notch band, lots of bouncing around & really nice to see so many people make the effort to dress up (or down) for the occasion.

L: The campsite clearing on Sunday, continually thinking, "Right that lot are still packing up, they'll sort out that pile of rubbish..." then on the next trip seeing that the people had left it all behind.

Many thanks to all those who did sort out their own rubbish.

G: Help out lots - Check.
Win some games of gladiators - Check (still a poor second to Simon though).

C: The Gandini Juggling Project. It was their festival. 2 amazing dedicated shows & a storming spot in the Public Show. They are the absolute pinnacle of juggling today.

B: My lips. The cold wind & sea air ensured they were cracked & falling apart for most of the festival. I'm not sure what the staff at Waitrose thought of me but all I bought was excessive quantities of cider & vaseline.

S: Didn't get lynched about this website.

British Juggling Convention 2010 HLGCBS

H: I think the biggest high was being there for the pre-show chaos, this in itself has become an event in itself. The spectacular organ recital during this one was a real treat.

However, some embarrassing photographic evidence suggests my biggest high was hitting one of the tricks during the BKO.

L: The number of people I had to challenge about not having their passes, even people I know who should know better, this made me grumpy. To be fair all but 1 got their passes & came back to me.

Person who may or may not be called Beth, I will be looking for you...

G: Represent TWJC well at the BKO - check

C: Loz Becoz, for the obvious & for managing a smile the morning after the night before when I grabbed her to say well done for the previous night's renegade.

B: Struggling to get a seat in the Swamp tent.

S: Cat's explosion, I don't think any of us expected that.

Bungay Balls Up 2012 HLGCBS

H: Tim Hunkin is ace. Apart from him, I had a lot of fun all round and the sunshine on the last day was very welcome indeed.

L: Being ill. Again. That's 3 bungays in a row I've been ill for at least some of it

G: Do some juggling (shutit)

C: my better half was there with me, and he's deffo my crush.

B: "Wow! I don't think Ive ever seen you juggle before" or variants there of. pretty much Every Single Bastard on site said it at some point.

S: I done learned a siteswap! I know!

The Bristol University Juggling Convention 9 HLGCBS

H: All the cool people! Got to hang out with some awesome jugglers. Kind of organised my own games, although it was just 5ball endurances which i won! Huge pizza and cider from Pizza Express for tea. Yum! Met with some people i hadnt seen in a while.

L: Music too loud and too shitty. No offical games, so i just got a load of people together and played some.

G: Win 5ball endurance - Big fat check! Learn a new trick - Sort of check. Found what burkes burrage is, and seeing that ive learnt it ages under a different name!

C: Belly dancing juggling.

B: MUSIC WAY TOO LOUD!!!

S: Came so close to getting 5ball 5up 360!

29th European Juggling Convention, Millstreet, Ireland HLGCBS

H: The opening show. Jay & Manu were absolutely spectacular. Then Kris Kremo came on & lifted the show even higher. He was the embodiment of the word 'class'.

L: The Emerald Circus show, possibly the worst show I've ever seen (Jeremy James excepted)

G: Catch every show possible, mostly check despite the occasional change to the advertised show venue. I did miss the Eurovision Juggling Competition which was a shame.

C: Jay Gilligan, for showing me exactly how gladiators should be played during Fight Night. None of this juggle, high throw, swipe, repeat business. He played with such flair. A real joy to watch.

B: Rusty & Chuggy from the Emerald Circus show, who did more to ruin it that anyone else on stage.

S: The price of alcohol.

It's Him -

Milton Keynes Juggling Convention 3 HLGCBS

H: Everything going well. Show starting pretty much on time and finishing spot on 9pm. All the acts, all the helpers.

L: What is this low you talk of?

G: Have convention go ok with no major problems - tick

C: Concrete Circus as always

B: Finding rubbish bins and site manager

S: Sam Goodburn. Especially how great his performing skills have improved since BJC and him winning BYJOTY

The London (Juggling) Convention 2012 HLGCBS

H: Feeding The Fish - as an act and as people.

L: Pre-convention: "Bring something to sit on!" I brought a chair. Before show:"Sorry, no chairs allowed!". Bah.

G: Bohemia has no seekers.

C: FTF

B: Tiredness

S: Lix: "Want to pass?" > Instant club in face. Owww!

#hlgcbs #TLC2012

Orinoco - - Parent

H: Feeding the Fish. There were a few acts in the show that left me feeling flat, but they just blew me away.

L: The heat in the hall. It's fantastic to see a really packed juggling hall, but the heat we generate is an unfortunate side effect.

G: n/a

C: Oli & Liam - smooth, moody, very talented, a smidgen attractive.

B: Sprained wrist, couldn't do much :(

S: Feeding the Fish's new toys. The effects they produced were genuinely shocking.

mrawa - - Parent

H: Feeding the Fish, awesome to see the TLC logo in their pixel poi!

L: Lowest point was pretending to be a surfboard for Tom as a demonstration of one of the games... the was the lowest I was all day!

G: Drink water... so thirsty!

C: Ryan's Hat manipluations... I might have to start juggling hats...

B: Stage Lighting and Feedback, not much I could do about it, but thankfully we had brilliant Sound/Lighting guy and an awesome Stage Manager.

S: No accidents, nothing really went wrong...

Boulder Juggling Festival 2012 HLGCBS

H: Waking from the sedative to discover that during the endoscopy they had removed the tube going up my nose and down my throat.

L: The insertion of said tube. I have a new found respect, and disdain, for blockheaders.

G: To give a good workshop and show performance. Hmmmm.... The two nights in the hospital didn't help, but the two of my three days I taught went well, and I am proud I made it out in time for the show! I'll give this a 50% achievement rate.

C: Unoriginal, but the organisors: Bekah Smith, Warren Hammond, Cindy Marvell. They put together a great weekend, as well as doing so much to get me over, and being so supportive and helpful when it was needed!

B: Plastic tubing. And all the places it can be put.

S: In the USA, the fast-response paramedic team isn't a fast car or a motorcycle like in Europe. It's a full size FIRE TRUCK! Complete with burly six man crew.
