Dab Hands Juggling Club
A bit late, but here's the final night video from Dab Hands.

Better late than never :)
Pity to lose that club, although I can't complain as I wasn't really doing my bit to keep it running.
Talking of juggling in Bristol, I did intend to turn up on Monday to play with your ball and my ring - although I'm dog sitting J's labrador while also doing early starts/late finishes in the office for the next few weeks - so I was just too knackered!
Fair enough. I'll try to keep it in the bag. I found a MMX-style ball too, you can have that one as well, if you find it suitable.

The golf club balance trick was excellent!
Little Paul - - Parent #
Thanks. It's nice to have that in there, as that club was the place where I first got the whole trick up, in a controlled manner.
Just heard that #DabHands is to close down, after 26(?) years. Dwindling numbers for some time now, and the funds are running out. Last meet on Sep 30th. September meets are free, so pop in to say hello again, if you've not been for a while, and then goodbye.
https://www.jugglingedge.com/club.php?ClubID=5
I hope Juggling John's Juggling Jaunt is able to get to Dab Hands before it closes.
Little Paul - - Parent #
That's a shame, but not entirely unexpected.
I will certainly be there for the last one (and would be up for toasting it goodbye in the wellington after)
Do you know if Ian is still in touch with the chap who used to run it before he took it over? I think he moved to Weston-Super-Mare or something about 10 years ago. Would be nice if we could get him back for the last one, I'm kicking myself that I can't remember his name.
I can see his face, and hear his voice, but I just can't remember his name.
Little Paul - - Parent #
I think Doug is who I was thinking of, although I'd forgotten about stuart!
Cedric Lackpot - - Parent #
I can remember the middle aged fellow who looked like he might be a supporting role in a British sitcom, but I'm fucked if I can remember any names. His main job seemed to be making everyone stop for tea and biscuits, which he performed admirably. Tarim would be the correct oracle to answer this one I think.
At the penultimate #DabHands , a few clubs were shaken out of a storage case. Freaks! David Cain has email...

It's the last ever Dab Hands next Tuesday. Do come along to say cheerio if you're within range.
Little Paul - - Parent #
I intend to be there on Tuesday. More so than any other time I've ever said that!
Looking at https://tlmb.net/misc/DabHandsClubs/DabHandsClubs_sm.jpg and going left to right, I can spot:
Freaks Kestrel (the one-piece club the body of the Acrobat is made from)
3 Blue Freaks Acrobats
What looks like an earlyish beard euro
4 "swinging clubs" but I can't remember who would have made them
The last 3 are odd though, they're smaller than I remember "Flare" clubs being, and have the wrong shaped handle. Anyone able to ID them?
It's a Todd Smith, not a Beard. The blue bulbous clubs are heavier than the red ones. Neither they nor the small ones have any markings. You can check them out on Tuesday, but then they're all heading to David's museum. Thanks for the "Acrobats" confirmation. See you next week.
mike.armstrong - - Parent #
Has anyone else noticed the slight tinge that American-made white clubs all seem to have? That Todd Smith club and all of the white Renegades that I've seen have a slightly blue, slightly translucent look to them.
Any theories?
Cheers
-Mike
I won't be at #DabHands tonight. Perhaps I'll go to the poker instead.
https://tlmb.net/LastDabHands/DabHanders_sm_title.jpg
What is your juggling club doing for Christmas? We've got a table booked at our favourite Thai restaurant tonight because we don't have the hall.
Daniel Simu - - Parent #
Flying, spinning, falling, but I'll probably spend more time with my balls!
christhejuggler - - Parent #
eating cake and listening to music and juggling of course
York Jugglers - - Parent #
We had mince pies and seasonal cups of tea in between juggling and doing our best to avoid hitting the xmas decorations around our juggling hall.
#Altern8 is on as usual next Monday. There will probably be the usual (large) amount of tea drinking and biscuit eating, etc.
#DabHands was quiet on Tuesday, just the 4 of us. Kev came along even though he'd had a recent fall off a bike, so did some heavy tea drinking and sitting. Mark hit #55 of the Endless Combo. http://juggling.tv/13678 Rich and I had a very close game of Spin-Off, and then Mark joined in for another. Kev said it was surprisingly good as a spectator sport.

Wish I had a regular juggling club, but the WJF is in town right now so I'm doing that :) Already met one juggler there that, like me, lives in Las Vegas and loves juggling! Yay! Hopefully we'll get a regular club going again soon.
Happy winter holidays, Edgers!
-Steve
#DabHands is closed tomorrow, but #Altern8 is free tonight and next week!
Sorry for late notices, not my fault!
https://jugglingedge.com/club.php?ClubID=5& {--- Closed 9th
https://jugglingedge.com/club.php?ClubID=4& {--- Free 9th & 16th
Oh Noes! Thanks for the heads up. We would have turned up.
PS Closed 10th not 9th :) well dab hands technically is closed on both I suppose ....
and of course I missed this message - d'oh. any idea if dab hands is on on the 17th?
I believe so, although I'm obviously not a reliable source. I'll be heading along unless I hear otherwise.
Or not, as neither of us is feeling too bright. I have no idea what the arrangements are next week as it's Christmas eve?!
https://www.jugglingedge.com/club.php?ClubID=5& is up to date.. Including shutdown dates.
It was quite busy at #altern8 last night. Almost no room to juggle. Or at least, so I'm told, as I was stuffed with dinner and on a really comfy sofa beforehand, and I couldn't quite persuade myself to get up and go. I'll bet there was tea drinking and biscuit eating aplenty.
But tonight I did go to #dabhands tonight. Quite busy - 9 people, although the Kung Fu (or was it Tai Chi?) people said they were going to show up, but didn't. Kev, Sam and Rachel arrived in time for the tea break. Kev did some passing with Ian and Chris. They were really good at the standing-an-arm-and-a-club's-length-apart pattern, but I missed what else they were doing. Rachel got the hang of the changing directions poi circles. New bloke Fred came along and juggled balls, working on his quite tight 4 ball mills mess amongst other stuff. Rob Fiery was in town and showed up for the evening to play with clubs. That club-on-club-knob cascade pattern will be really nice once its solid.
I "practice passed" 6th Dan! So that's once a month for the last four months. Good, but it'd be nice to get a 2nd one in this month if I can. I also was trying a new trick with a new kendama, and played around with my new video light.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with that light, as I very nearly bought one last week
Initial experiments suggest a sheet of printer paper paperclipped onto the barn doors is a bit too abrupt a diffuser, and no diffuser is dazzling to the filmee. There's a built in slot to insert a supplied diffuser sheet, but it doesn't seem to do that much. I reckon a piece of greaseproof paper or a bit of muslin might do the trick.
But yeah, it whacks out brightness alright.
Little Paul - - Parent #
What's its colour temperature like? I was worried LEDs might be a bit on the blue side?
As for diffusers, I've found tesco value shower curtains to be rather useful in the past
I read a review that said it was a little bit on the blue side, but not much. Plus, I got the MkII, which has a 5000K and a 3200K setting. It's adjustable between the 2. (Or at least, it should be, I'm not quite sure what I'm doing.) Cheers for the diffuser tip!
Shot with iPad camera, in a small room with a small window on a cloudy day. With and without the light on. (From ~7.5ft away.)
https://kendama.co.uk/images/Void_Collection_Nov2013_iPad.jpg
Oddly, that image is showing on my iPad, but not on my computer. Orin, is it something to do with the site swap parser? I saw this in the code:<a href="#" class="SiteSwap" title="19 object pattern, click to watch in JugglingLab">
I wonder if Nov2013 is a site swap?!
Meanwhile,...
https://kendama.co.uk/images/Void_Collection_Nov2013_iPad.jpg
...that's the image link in code tags, which may or may not show up! (It isn't showing in the post preview.)
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I witnessed the absence of Mark. Which doesn't sound like much, but it's something like only the 4th time he's missed a night in ~10 years.
It was a quiet week at #dabhands last Tuesday, just the 5 of us. Chris was working on his ball/hat/club stuff, and Mark and Ian did some passing. A lady from a Tai Chi (or was it Kung Fu?) group popped in to ask about the possibility of sharing the hall. Well, it would cut the rent down, so we may try it. Meanwhile, Rich brought his homemade metal pill in, and I filmed him for 15 minutes to come up with this:

#dabhands is closed tomorrow, despite https://www.jugglingedge.com/club.php?ClubID=5& not having had a shutdown date added. (Not my fault!)

A method for making crochet juggling balls out of old plastic carrier bags has just popped up on rec.juggling and it's an interesting idea!
Details here: https://thehoophub.co.uk/how-to-make-a-crochet-juggling-ball-from-plastic-bags-recycloballs/
It's been about 20 years since I last attempted to crochet anything, and I don't really need a new project at the moment (and to be honest, don't juggle enough these days to actually get around to using them if I did make a set) but I thought I'd pass the link on. Would be interesting to use the same technique with other materials as well.
That's pretty neat but at 1.5 hours per ball I can't help but think the effort could be better spent on making a traditional bean bag. Aside from enjoying the act of making them I can't think of any advantages of a crocheted ball over a bean bag.
I also enjoyed this video found on that site:
https://youtu.be/IDbNJHkI_8c
I might have to give this a try - crochet seems to be my current obsession (Yes, I know, I'm ashamed to admit that my juggling has fallen off a bit - but that is mainly because circumstances over the last month or two haven't allowed me to attend #dabhands - it's just been crap lately, I am hoping to get back there next week)
It was pretty busy at #DabHands tonight. Ian was trying out his own hand-braided whip. The acro crew were balancing each other in one corner, Johnny, Sam and Rachel had a dabble at kendama, Sam seeming quite intigued, and Johnny seemed hooked. Ian and Mark were passing 6 clubs on 1-count versus 4-count(or was it 3?). Chris was teaching Sam some club passing too. The waveboard was getting a bit of use too. Meanwhile I was working on some onion-and-2-ladles moves. (I've got a "walkabout chef" gig on Saturday.)
Little Paul - - Parent #
Who was the guy at Bristol a couple of years ago who was messing around with ladles? I seem to remember he had some interesting moves involving hanging one off the other.
Or was that spaghetti servers? I've got vague recolections of a trick involving poking something through the hole in the end of the implement, normally used to hang it up.
My aged memory fails me. I think I've seen someone doing something pretty nice along those lines at an EJC. My ladles don't have a little curved hook at the end of the handle, which I seem to recall has been used to good effect.
I may have to, ahem, "be inspired by" this though...
http://juggling.tv/11706
hard to juggle with those curved ends though as many bored hours in kitchens has proved to me.Enjoy your "chef" gig, it's all in the mis en place.
fak reckons it might have been Idam. Or Tom Derrick at Bungay, playing with those dog-ball thrower thingies.
Little Paul - - Parent #
It wasn't Tom, and it was deffo at Bristol (slope field, red/yellow tent, which narrows it down to about a 10 year period I think) so it must have been Idam then.
I remember him, though not who he was (not anyone suggested so far). It was spaghetti server things.
Stephen Bridge did some tricks with ladles & balls on the Renegade stage at Crawley a few years back.
It was a really fun night and good to meet you! Rachel asked me to pass on that she also was interested in kendama, please don't think she wasn't - sadly due to one of her medical conditions (there are many) her knees just couldn't take it for too long. I never realised it was all in the knees! I'm going to have to check out a few youtube vids and pay particular attention to the stance...
Club passing with Chris was great fun even if I was all over the place. I've brought my clubs to work so hopefully, of a lunchtime, I can get a bit of practice in on my 3 club cascade and slow it down / clean it up a bit.
Nice to meet you too. Check out https://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,905.0.html , Sam.... and Rachel. :-)
bookmarked! we took a look at the main website and store too, I think we'd definitely like to buy a kendama with a green tama next time we see you if that's cool. We'll be at dab hands next week for sure and most likely every week for the foreseeable future :)
Hello all!
I signed up to the juggling edge about a week ago but have only just got around to posting here...
I haven't juggled much in the last few years, since my local club shut down, before that I'd learned a few 3 ball tricks and to juggle 4 balls and 3 clubs (not at the same time, haha...) plus lots of mucking about with various other props. I realise this is probably pretty much beginners stuff to most of you!
Anyways my ladyfriend and I have realised we need a good excuse to get out of the house and do something, so we may well be turning up at one or two of the Bristol clubs in the near future, hoping to meet some of you there.
The flipside of this is that she is taking me to a knitting/crochet circle, which I'm surprised to find I'm quite looking forward to.
Cheers,
Sam
Thanks! That you will, with a fair wind I expect we shall be along next week, to one or the other of those two :)
A shame - looking at your profile am looking forward to you showing me your けん玉 (NOT your 金玉... hehe) - hope that shows up correctly on here!
I have some crocheted hacky sacks that work quite well as juggling balls.
Just putting it out there. Do with this knowledge what you will. ;)
pumpkineater23 - - Parent #
Hey hello Sam and welcome.
Little Paul - - Parent #
Hurrah! Welcome aboard Sam.
I'm a juggler from Bristol, but I don't get out much (too many other projects on the go!) so probably won't get to meet you particularly soon... but jump on in with both the Monday and Tuesday clubs as they're both very friendly and full of lovely people!
Thanks, well I'll hope to meet you sometime then :) I'm sensing that about the clubs, everyone sounds very cool!
Welcome Sam, glad you made it.
Don't be surprised at enjoying new skills, I think juggling makes you appreciate any type of skill more. After spending the time to learn how to juggle it makes you have a greater awareness that any skill can be learnt if you just put the effort into it. This means that you are more likely to give new things a try which is A Good Thing™.
Simon & Kevin asked me to demonstrate the 5 ball start I learnt last week. Nice to know that something as simple as a foot lift can cause Simon to launch a ball across the hall. John, Sam & Laurence were doing a lot of feeding & did a better (or worse depending on your point of view) job of not taking out the skaters. Cat & Paul on the other hand were doing their best.
No TWJC next week because almost all of us will be at #bjc2013! Do any other UK clubs close for the BJC because there would be almost no one left? (I see York does).
#twjc
#dabhands does. #altern8 sometimes closes for Bungay.
At Altern8 on Monday, Chris brought in one of those "trainer" rola bolas - basically a skateboard deck with a cunning bit of elastic holding it onto the (bevelled) tube. I maintain that it was the bevel, and the inability of the tube and board to separate that caused my sudden uncontrolled floorwards exit. My hip has recovered now, and my elbow only has the slightest twinginess left. I should be okay for BJC. I should have known better (as Jim Diamond sang) than to go anywhere near any kind of rola bola anyway....
Little Paul - - Parent #
BJC is tantalisingly close isn't it!
My van is still in the garage, apparently the only thing stopping it passing its MOT now is a corroded brake pipe which they assure me will be sorted by tomorrow lunchtime - which just about gives me time to get it taxed by BJC.
It's cutting it a *little* fine!
Little Paul - - Parent #
I've got a backup tent, but that doesn't rhyme as pleasingly with "plan"
Little Paul - - Parent #
Having been promised "it'll be ready tomorrow mate" pretty much every day this week, were down to "having trouble bleeding the brakes as the bleed nipples are seized" If its not sorted by tomorrow lunchtime, I'll have it back off them stick it on the drive and go for plan b
And yes, I've got AA and J has RAC cover ... but it needs an mot before that's of any use.
Beginning to wish I'd never bought the bloody thing!
:(
Fingers crossed.
Does plan B involve J taking you in his car? Always good to have a back up man!
(yes I've been waiting most of the day to do that)
Little Paul - - Parent #
It may well do, but he may need to leave the spare quiche at home to fit me in.
Which would leave us without a backup flan
My Grandmother makes a great quiche. I'll see if I can bring her along as a back up Nan.
Little Paul - - Parent #
No backups required! I've got the van back from the garage! Yay! A quick trip to the post office on Monday morning, and I'll be all legal to drive up to BJC. Phew!
Unfortunately, the exhaust has now all but fallen off my Polo. I think it was jealous of all the attention the van has had this week.
Tomorrows adventure is "refactor the bed in the van" - I'm hoping the Mk2 version will have improved storage facilities and be easier to convert to/from the seating configuration. It'll be a stepping stone towards Mk3, but Mk3 involves a lot more work than I'll have time for before BJC...
Oh, and tonights adventure is to put the finishing touches to the siteswaphone. A siteswap validator (written entirely in asterisk dialplan logic) available on a public telephone number. Watch this space!
Yay!
I was going to ask if you were documenting the tranformation process but that would be a silly question.
Love the slide out bed/bench. Although I can't see anything that would hold the sliding section in place? In my experience vans vibrate while being driven!
Little Paul - - Parent #
Hmm. I don't appear to have documented the sink/cooker unit which I built about 2 weeks before Bristol. Might take some photos of that tomorrow before I dismantle bed Mk1.
Friction and the weight of the bits of chipboard on the top keep the sliding section in place while driving - unfortunately at the moment the chipboard isn't secured - and the second piece of that *does* slide around while driving and makes an awful bang when it falls off the bed.
I've taken to driving with it in bed mode to minimise sliding.
The biggest drawback of the pullout design at the moment is that you can't stand in the middle of it to pull it out because the sink unit is where you would be standing. This means you're trying to pull it out from one end, while keeping it parallel so the slats don't bind up. This is annoyingly awkward.
Mk2 will still have the pullout section, but it'll be much shorter, and the seating configuration will be C shaped rather than L shaped. The large slidey pieces of chipboard will be replaced by lift up squares of chipboard attached to the frame with hinges - apart from the bit needed to fill in the "C" which will function as a backrest for the new bit of seating.
This should solve the slidey chipboard problem, and the pull-out problem - although it does mean a bit of a cut and shut job on the cushions!
Then I can box in the frame, and have lovely secure storage boxes for luggage and toys!
