Daniel Simu -

Trivia on webforums is a bit weird.
We can all google for answers! Also, many of us have read every single word that is written about juggling.. But I like the trivia idea! Perhaps we can find some harder questions together, and keep the easy questions for real life trivia?
I'll start, feel free to answer if you know:

Which festival(s) had Luke Burrage naked on stage?
Which 2 important inventions is Steve Mills credited with?
Who claims to have the world record spinning most rings at the same time (around body and 'mouthpiece') and how many rings was that?
Why is the EJA founded in the Netherlands?
Who is the Polish aerialist that went on to become a famous juggler?
Who invented propeller props that are thrown up with spin such that their decent is slowed down, and who still performs with them today?
Which famous toss and contact juggler became an amazing cyr wheel spinner?
Which famous ikarian family produced brilliant a gentleman juggler?
Who owns the world record of juggling most snowballs while wearing blue jeans and having a dog in your backpack?

Robotic juggle - - Parent

love the last one hmm let me think is it you?

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Nope, wrong. I will reply when someone gets a question right, no answer = assume wrong :p

Little Paul - - Parent

Hahaha! That world record one is ace https://youtu.be/TUbfA-XS8D4

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Yay, another win!

Little Paul - - Parent

Ooh! Now that's more like it. I don't know any of the answers off the top of my head, although I know where to start looking.

This has made me think though, it might be an interesting exercise to make up a set of "trivial pursuits" cards full of juggling trivia. Not a small task by any means , but it could make for a fun convention game or two.

I shall put some thought into your questions first though

Robotic juggle - - Parent

yah I love trivia and apparently im bad at writing it

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Wasn't there a convention with juggler trading cards? Those could contain trivia... That would actually be nice!

Mïark - - Parent

Bristol Convention #brizzle had trading cards one year, in the style of Top Trumps card with stats like how many objects you can juggle, how long you have been juggling, shoe size

The Void - - Parent

Tax.
Cinquevalli.
Kremo.
Lots of people!

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Okay Void, you win 3, but for the last one: Who claimed it?

Little Paul - - Parent

Q1 is EJC Athens (2007?) although I'm sure that's not the first time it happened, but can't dig out a reference.
Q2 I have the obvious half of the answer, but haven't filled in the other half yet

Little Paul - - Parent

Seems he's responsible for the accent over the e in dube (no idea how to do accented chars on my phone) at least according to this fascinating interview
https://youtu.be/6HiT1spyMFQ

Adrian G - - Parent

Thanks for sharing that video! Hadn't seen that before and it was very interesting

Little Paul - - Parent

That's also the first time I've ever heard Brian speak as well, and he doesn't quite match my mental image of him.

This isn't entirely surprising given that we're about 3000 miles apart and have never met.

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Q1 is more of a joke, since I have no clue about the correct answer. I was at one EJC where this happened, but then I heard it happened before already. I was not in Athens so this might be correct, but there is at least one more festival ;)

Dee - - Parent

I was a (sober) witness to it on the last night of EJC 2007 in Athens. Twas an Irish renegade that went on for hours.  Mostly usual crap.  Then Joanny [who was the stage manager of the gala] decided to recruit some of the acts that he hadn't been able to see / enjoy to do some serious jamming.

DavidCain - - Parent

I can answer two that haven't been answered yet off the top of my head. Mills invented Mills Mess (duh) and four club scissors. Sergie Ignatov Jr. invented the propeller props.
David Cain

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Ohh, it seems there is much more going on with Mills than I could have ever imagined.
Mills mess of course, but the information about the other thing I had in mind came from you, David! Maybe I made a wrong assumption though.
I had no clue about dubE or 4 club scissors.

Sergei Ignatov Jr is indeed the current juggler who performs with propellers, but he is not the inventor... (which I can prove with both video material and a statement by Sergei jr.)

Daniel Simu - - Parent

So my suggested answer that Steve Mills 'invented' the long handled clubs (which everybody juggles today) seems to be off. I blindly copied from "The first long handled composite clubs were created when Steve Mills took a set of Dube clubs apart and put in a longer dowel." but on the pictures you see many many older clubs that have handles even longer than the bodies!

Little Paul - - Parent

Don't feel bad about it though, David and I both came up with interesting facts about Steve that I hadn't known about before.

Can David and I both have a point for that question? ;)

Daniel Simu - - Parent

hehe, of course! Also, I really wonder now: What is the four club scissors?

Little Paul - - Parent

I think it's a synch pattern: (lh front cross, rh backcross) (rh front cross, lh backcross)

Adrian G - - Parent

I was under the impression that that was a butterfly variant, or maybe I misunderstand your description...

I've known scissors as synch, both hands throwing backcrosses (very collision prone)

Butterfly is still synch but alternates which hand is throwing a backcross and which is throwing a normal crossing double

Unless people have swapped around same names over here, which is very possible

The Void - - Parent

I concur with LP. That trick has been known as Scissors at least since the mid-Eighties (at least in Europe). Jason Garfield tried to redefine it for the WJF - how silly. I've never heard the name Butterfly before, but your description makes it sound like the same trick as Scissors.

Adrian G - - Parent

To me 'front cross' means something similar to under the arm but in the same plane as backcrosses, whereas what I know as butterfly has a standard crossing double not a front cross (unless that's another term that's changed...)

The Void - - Parent

You're right about frontcrosses. Rewriting LP's description, Scissors is:
(RH crossing double, LH double backcross)(LH crossing double, RH double backcross)*

Adrian G - - Parent

OK, yeah probably just some WJF terminology that filtered into the Australian juggling community...

Do you know the both throws backcrosses one by another name?

The Void - - Parent

I'd call it Synched Backcrosses, but it's neither a widely done trick, or a widely known name, IMO.

Adrian G - - Parent

Yeah fair enough, I suppose the fact that it's rarely done outside of WJF probably doesn't help...

Little Paul - - Parent

I *think* I've heard that version called "full scissors" or "double scissors"

Daniel Simu - - Parent

As of now we have:

Q1: Discussion
Q2: Discussion
Q3:
Q4: Correct answer from Void!
Q5: Correct answer from Void!
Q6: Incomplete answer
Q7:
Q8: Correct answer from Void
Q9: Correct answer from Little Paul

Q3 -> Does Boris Panfilenok have this record?

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Boris is the only one I know who did 5 rings around each arm on stage. Together with 2 around his legs that makes 12. This is not even half of the 'world record'.

This is probably the hardest question in the list. The last month I spend a lot of time finding every single thing possible on the internet about this trick and I found very little....

As for Q7 which nobody attempted to answer yet: This might be an easy question for a cyr wheel spinner, and a hard one for a juggler. I discovered about this when I met another contact juggler who recently started spinning.

FootballStijn - - Parent

Q7: Marco paoletti

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Correct!

Little Paul - - Parent

I didn't know that! Has anyone got any video? (save me searching youtube myself ;)

Dee - - Parent

This was my guess, but having never seen Marco's cyr wheel routine in person (especially with another cyr wheeler present - I've just about tried the German wheel at BJCs, the Cyr Wheel is a whole other ball game) so I didn't feel qualified to comment on how good he is at it. Look for the ReCircle project if you want to see examples of his cyr wheel stuff.

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Oh, new googling research informed me that it is very very very likely that Boris Panfilenok would know the right answer!

The Void - - Parent

I'm sure I've seen more than
http://juggling.tv/410
(0m28s)

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Thanks for the vid! That seemed to be 14 rings, still not even half of the 'world record'!

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Q1: Discussion
Q2: Correct answers from Little Paul & David Cain. I failed!
Q3: Still unknown!
Q4: Correct answer from Void!
Q5: Correct answer from Void!
Q6: Incomplete answer
Q7: Correct answer from FootballStijn!
Q8: Correct answer from Void!
Q9: Correct answer from Little Paul!

So the remaining questions are:
Q1: Which festival(s) had Luke Burrage naked on stage?
Q3: Who claims to have the world record spinning most rings at the same time (around body and 'mouthpiece') and how many rings was that?
Q6: Who invented propeller props that are thrown up with spin such that their decent is slowed down, and who still performs with them today?

Mïark - - Parent

Is there an agreed difference between a ring and a hula hoop?
The most hula hoops at the same time (according to wikipedia) is 132.

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Cool! The online dictionaries are not very helpful in making a difference. At the moment I am learning to spin small hoops (50cm diameter, but made out of tubes) and I noticed that the jugglers call them hoops and the hoopers call them rings!

My own definition is that rings are flat and that hoops are tubes...

I am still hoping that someone gets the answer, because the person having the answer might have more info for my research too!

Daniel Simu - - Parent

I already have written down 11 new questions, when should I post the next 9? When should I reveal the remaining answers? Is Little Paul going to beat the Void?

Little Paul - - Parent

Q3: No.

Can I have a point for that?

Daniel Simu - - Parent

:p

Dee - - Parent

Actually I would rate Void's answer to Q4 as incomplete.  Having sat through a lot of EJA board meetings discussing changes to the statues, I learned far too much about reasons for things being the way they were/are...

Daniel Simu - - Parent

I was aware that I could not give 100% of the answer myself either, but since one of the board members visits our house regularly I thought I could get more info if needed ;). Void's answer is what popped up in my head, and I assumed it would be the most important one. Feel free to share more info!

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Time is up!

Q1: Luke burrage naked on stage? I remember the games at the EJC 2010 in Joensuu, and also EJC Athens was mentioned

Q3: Most rings spinning at the same time? Alfons Virkavs aka Enriko Larsons spins 32 rings! https://i.imgur.com/AUj6H1D.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/sdvNUd0.jpg
Anybody who knows more about this person or this trick please do contact me! I am working with my Chinese teacher (who also performed this trick) to recreate it..

Q6: Propeller props are indeed performed by Sergei Ignatov Jr. as David Cain mentioned, but they were invented by his father, Leonid Ignatov. Very few people know that Sergei Ignatov (senior) had a brother Leonid who was also a brilliant juggler and acrobat!

Chris - - Parent

I'm not convinced that that is all one mouthpiece...

Daniel Simu - - Parent

The mouth piece connects to a rest that sits on top of the head, from which the main pole rises.
