How directory section email addresses are used

Directory section email addresses are those added under "Contact details" when creating a new club, event or organisation.

All email addresses are encrypted before being stored on the server. I will never send you spam and these addresses are not included in any of the feeds that allow people to download directory data in bulk.

These addresses are displayed publicly using a standard mailto: link for maximum accessibility. I do NOT employ any obfuscation techniques because they can be overcome by a monkey. This means they will be harvested by spammers scraping the directory section pages.

Worried about receiving spam?

If you are, then you probably don't have effective spam filtering. You can easily set up an effective spam filter using an intermediary Gmail account like so:

  1. Register a new Gmail account.
  2. Click on Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  3. Enter your regular email address under Add a forwarding address.
  4. Follow the instructions in the verification email that Gmail sends to your regular address.
  5. Use the Gmail address as the contact address on your Edge club/event/organisation listing.

Your new Gmail account will now forward any emails that pass its excellent spam filter on to your regular address. If for some reason spam starts to get through you can just turn the forwarding off, abandon the account and set up a replacement (don't forget to update the Edge!).

Directory section email addresses are treated differently to your account email address.
